I have the privilege of speaking at the 2024 STEM/STEAM & Education Conference in Honolulu, HI. The opportunity represents the first chance to speak at an academic conference! We will be discussing how protectionist rhetoric influenced U.S.-Japan Economic Relations during the Carter Administration by examining annual Economic Summits from 1977-1981. Economic Summits: U.S.-Japan Economic Relations during the Carter Administration, 1977-1981 Abstract: Economic summits were pivotal meetings where world leaders convened to tackle pressing global issues. Amidst these high-stakes gatherings, the relationship between the U.S. and Japan during the Carter Administration provides a fascinating glimpse into the complexities of international diplomacy. As Japan rose to economic prominence following the U.S. withdrawal from the Pacific after the Vietnam War, these two nations grappled with balancing national interests and global financial stability. Central to their discussions was the concept of protectionism. Unlike typical economic diplomacy, where protectionism is an implicit strategy, I seek to examine why President Jimmy Carter and Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda explicitly used “protectionism” in their correspondence. At the center of tensions was a bilateral trade imbalance caused by Japan’s export of color televisions to the U.S., vividly illustrating the nuance dynamics in their bilateral relations related to global responsibility and U.S. hegemony. As I’ve examined archival documents, including summit minutes and diplomatic correspondence, my research highlights the dynamic of tensions between the two states. These correspondences provide broader insights into the challenges of the Carter administration in navigating the world economy and his consistent presidential confidence in the future of humanity and the economy. By understanding the specificity of world leaders’ explicit references to protectionism, we better understand the delicate balance between economic power and diplomatic relations, offering lessons that resonate in today’s complex global landscape.

Bringing knives to knife fights: JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon's insistence on a level playing field for all market participants, e.g. on requesting that credit card issuers be similarly restricted in the amount of fees that they can charge customers as the banks are, rings fair, at least for attaining parity between credit card issuers and banks under the regulations. However, whether it's fair for customers is a separate question altogether. If the banks could chose: 1. Banks working within a simple business model framework which are potentially lower both margin and conflict-of-interest businesses could expect lighter regulation but also comparatively lower fines in the event of a spill on aisle 6. 2. Complex model framework banks under heavy regulation/ supervision could then expect heavier fines in the event of a spill than (1). 3. Complex framework banks under light regulation/supervision could then potentially attract the most extensive and intrusive penalties, (ie. not limited to monetary fines) for spills.
