While the Golden Globes has an uneven record in previewing the Oscar winners in the top categories, it does give us great insight into one of the below-the-line races: Best Original Score. In the past decade, the two groups have differed only twice. In 2014, when the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. members opted for Alex Ebert’s score for “All is Lost,” while the academy awarded Steven Price for “Gravity,” which won a leading seven Oscars. The following year, the Globes honored Johann Johannsson (“The Theory of Everything”) while the Oscars went with Alexandre Desplat (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”).
This year, Desplat is hoping that the rule holds as he won the Globe for “The Shape of Water.” Our official Oscar odds have him far ahead in the race for Best Original Score. Trailing him are his four Golden Globe rivals: Carter Burwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Jonny Greenwood (“Phantom Thread”), John Williams (“The Post”) and Hans Zimmer (“Dunkirk”).
Desplat had lost six Oscar races before he finally won: “The Queen” (2007), “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2009), “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2010), “The King’s Speech” (2011), “Argo” (2013) and “Philomena” (2014). He had doubled his chances of winning in 2015 with a bid for “The Imitation Game” as well.

He deserves it. The music is fantastic. I feel that TSOW’s 3 categories that are the closest to locks (for winning) are Director, Score, and Production Design
No way Alexandre Desplat should have 2 Oscars and Zimmer only 1(!). There is nothing special about The Shape Of Water-score, it’s just plan safe and conventional, and quite frankly, boring. How many phenomenal scores must Zimmer do before he gets his second Oscar!? Desplat robbed Zimmer in 2015 and I will be p*ssed if he does it again this year.
“Tick Tock Tick Tock …. ”
Das jus’ brilliant.
“Tick Tock Tick Tock Tick Tock ….”
Yeah, das was jus’ brilliant.
Alexandre Desplat all the way! What has Hans Zimmer’s I win got to do with anything? You show signs of chopped logic, my good man! Go on merit!
