Katie Holmes is making her directorial debut with an adaptation of the book All We Had.

The star optioned the novel in July and has got Jane Rosenthal (Little Fockers) to produce and The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone to write the screenplay.

Holmes will also star in the film as a mother living on the brink of poverty with her 13-year-old daughter.

Rosenthal said in a statement: "Katie has such a clear vision for the book's irreverent, original mother-daughter relationship. Her passion for the material, along with Josh Boone's ability to tell stories grounded in the comedy and drama of every day, will truly bring these characters to life."

All We Had is Annie Weatherwax's debut novel and was only released in August.

Holmes will next be seen on screens in Miss Meadows, in which she plays a teacher turned vigilante.

The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and is released on November 14.
