Iain De Caestecker has hailed Ryan Gosling as "a big inspiration" after working with the Drive star on his directorial debut How to Catch a Monster.
The In Fear and Agents of SHIELD star told Digital Spy that the actor-turned-filmmaker encouraged him and the rest of the cast to improvise.
"Ryan is someone who was a big inspiration to me before I knew him and this has only increased it," he said. "To have the chance to work in a movie with him, he is just a really amazing person and he wrote a really amazing script but he was someone who would come in every day and wanted us to bring something to it, we would improvise and try something new and it was always a really exciting time I remember.
"I loved being around him and I learnt a lot and it was one of the best experiences that I have ever had, it was a really inspiring place as well, and I haven't seen the final cut of the movie yet but knowing that Ryan has something to do with it, it is just a really exciting thing to be a part of."
The fantasy film, which also stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith and Eva Mendes, centres on a single mother who gets pulled into a dark underworld while her teenage son ends up in an underwater town.
De Caestecker said of his relationship with the cast: "[We] all became a very close family unit when we were out there and started filming, I was over at Christina's house the other night and Saoirse is over in LA just now filming so I saw her the other day as well and I still keep in touch with Matt when he is over.
"It was really lucky and I learnt a lot from everyone, that was one of the best experiences of it, the people that were there."
De Caestecker's horror film In Fear is released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 10. Watch a trailer below:
