Earlier this year, LancasterHistory received a new archival collection: the Opera Lancaster Organizational Records. Donated by Penn Square Music (@pennsquaremc), this collection chronicles the history of the Lancaster Opera Company, also known as OperaLancaster, from its inception in 1952 to performances as recent as 2015. Highlights include programs from iconic shows like "Daisy" in 1976 and "La Boheme." The collection also features organizational documents, memorabilia, photographs, scrapbooks, and audio recordings. The collection represents a valuable part of the history of Lancaster’s arts community. (📸 The Opera Lancaster Organizational Records, LancasterHistory) ... See MoreSee Less

This is the final week to view the “Open the Door: Baseball’s Color Line in Central Pennsylvania” exhibit at LancasterHistory in Stoudt Gallery. This display, which will be up until August 30, features the remarkable stories of Black baseball teams, such as the Harrisburg Giants, who played a pivotal role in the Eastern Colored League. This exhibition commemorates the significant milestone of the 100th anniversary of the Giants’ time at Lancaster’s historic Rossmere Baseball Park. It also highlights influential figures such as Keith Kelley, who played a crucial role in the integration of the Red Roses.

Additionally, you can learn more about these teams by watching the documentary “Open the Door: Baseball’s Color Line in Central Pennsylvania,” which explores the legacy of the Eastern Colored League, now available on LancasterHistory’s YouTube channel.
