AI Chat is a generative AI tool, powered by Microsoft Copilot. It creates new content based on your prompt or request. You can ask questions, request information or have a conversation on a wide range of topics.
Chat can follow the thread of a conversation, so you can ask follow-ups, or start a new topic when you’re ready to do something new.
AI Chat may feel and sound like a human, but it’s not. Mistakes are possible and you should always check the accuracy of the answers you get.
How is this different from search?
AI Chat is able to…
- Look at search results across the web and offer summarized answers and links to sources
- Understand natural language so you can chat and ask follow-up questions to your initial prompt
- Generate something completely new for you as a creative too

What can I ask AI Chat?
AI Chat can handle lots of different types of questions and requests. You can think of it as an assistant, a personal planner and creative partner all rolled into one. Here’s just some of what you can ask AI Chat:
- Summarize (“Tell me what happened in the last season of Law and Order”)
- Compare (“Compare minivans and organize them by price”)
- Create (“Write a wedding toast for the groom from the best man”)
- Explain (“Explain photosynthesis to a 5th grader”)
- Brainstorm (“What are good names for a boat?”)
- Plan (“Plan a keto friendly 5-day meal plan for two people”)
Tips for prompts
- Write in full sentences instead of search terms
- Think of AI Chat like texting a friend
- Tell AI Chat how it can help you (“make it shorter,” “give more detail,” “organize alphabetically”)
- Experiment and explore – there’s no ‘right’ way to use AI Chat, and the more you use it, the more confident you’ll get using the tool.
Anatomy of an answer
What if I don’t get a good answer?
- Ask a follow-up with specific instructions. For example, you can say “tell me more about…” or “give this as a list” or “explain this like I’m a beginner.”
- Use suggested prompts. You’ll see these prompts, created by AI, at the bottom of the answer.
- Give feedback if an answer is inaccurate or not helpful. Note that giving feedback will not immediately affect the answers you see.
Safety
AI Chat is a tool, and like any other technology, it’s been made to help humans with tasks. Though it may sound human-like sometimes, it's just a computer program. AI Chat can still make mistakes and contain errors.
Avoid sharing these types of information:
- Identifying information, like your full name, address, phone number, email or social security number.
- Financial information like credit cards numbers or bank account details
- Passwords or security codes
- Health information
- Sensitive or personal information you wouldn’t want to be known publicly.
Privacy
You must be logged into your Yahoo account to use AI Chat. Chat may use information, like your location, to give you the most helpful answers.

How many questions can I ask?
You can have 8 conversations a day. A conversation is the initial topic prompt and then the follow-ups.
You can ask 10 follow-ups per conversation. Once you reach that limit, you’ll need to start a new topic.
If I don’t use all my follow-ups, can I go back to a previous conversation and ask more questions?
Once you start a new topic, your previous conversations move to your history and you can no longer ask new questions.
Why do I need to start a new topic?
AI Chat is able to follow the thread of a conversation, so if you want to change topics, it’s best to start a new topic so chat doesn’t get too confused.
You may get an alert to start a new topic for two reasons:
- You’ve reached your limit of 10 follow-up questions
- AI Chat has gotten confused and needs to start over
What do I do if I get a bad answer?
AI Chat is still a new technology, so mistakes are always possible. Here are a few tips:
- Try rephrasing your question or giving more context
- Ask a follow-up question to clarify or expand on the topic
- Provide examples of what you’re looking for, such as “can you explain this like you would to a beginner?”
- Ask for references so you can check multiple sources
