Summary: After Mama and Baba died, Wei Ying thought he could take care of himself. He’d thought. But winter was coming, and the wind had gone cold. The feral dogs were getting bolder, and Wei Ying had nowhere to stay safe. He just… needed help. A little help. From someone.

When the terrified scream rang out, Wei Ying didn’t hesitate. Even if he didn’t have help, he could maybe help someone else and that was almost as good. Turns out, yeah, it was as good, in ways that Wei Ying couldn’t have seen coming.

I enjoyed this story, especially its worldbuilding, which builds on the lore from the same author's Su She time travel fix-it. However, the adopted twin was so co-dependent that I felt I learned more about them as a relationship than as individual people. (Not helped by the fact that they did so much twin switching shenanigans that many of the other characters treated them as a unit, rather than individuals.)

This is about half neglected kid fic (think Boxcar Children but more threat of child sexual assault.)

I liked it a lot, but I've loved some of the other stuff that this author has written.
