𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗞𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 The R7.9 million facility provides a modern, enclosed and secure space for commuters, informal traders and businesses, with lock-up facilities and improved infrastructure designed to support economic activity in one of Kayamandi’s busiest areas. The facility also strengthens the connection between Kayamandi and the wider Stellenbosch economy. Thousands of people travel between Kayamandi, the Stellenbosch CBD and surrounding communities every day for work, education, business and other opportunities. The Hub is already beginning to show its potential, with a number of businesses already operating from the facility, including various food outlets, a nail salon and a proudly Kayamandi-based local clothing brand. These businesses are an early indication of the economic activity and opportunities that this facility can unlock and we are confident that the Hub will continue to grow from strength to strength. The Municipality is looking ahead at opportunities to undertake similar upgrades at the Cloetesville Market and Ida’s Valley Market, with the aim of upgrading these facilities in a similar fashion. “We see this as the beginning of something bigger,” said Mayor Fasser. “ “Watch this space.” 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dD3uYXxG

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 Stellenbosch Municipality welcomes the findings of the FW de Klerk Foundation’s 2026 Local Government Report Card, which has recognised the Municipality as one of the best-performing local municipalities in South Africa. The independent report assessed all 8 metropolitan municipalities and a sample of 42 local municipalities across all nine provinces. Using 100 indicators covering service delivery, financial management, governance, accountability and constitutional obligations, the report found that municipal success is closely linked to stable leadership, sound finances and effective oversight. Among the municipalities sampled, Swartland Municipality was ranked first with a score of 90 out of 100, followed by George Municipality - Official LinkedIn on 87.5, Stellenbosch Municipality on 86, and Midvaal Local Municipality on 84.5. Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser said the Municipality’s performance is the result of building strong institutions and systems over time. “Good governance does not happen overnight. It is built deliberately and consistently over many years. This recognition reflects the strength of the systems we have put in place, the stability of our institution and the commitment of our administration and political leadership.” Mayor Fasser said Stellenbosch Municipality’s approach is underpinned by robust systems of assurance, risk management, internal controls and accountability across all departments. “We have worked hard to establish a culture where transparency and accountability are not simply principles written into policies, but are embedded in the way we operate every day. There is a zero-tolerance approach to financial mismanagement, waste or fraud and we remain committed to ensuring that every rand entrusted to the Municipality is managed responsibly.” Mayor Fasser added that the report should also be viewed as encouragement to continue improving. “While we welcome this independent recognition, we are not complacent. The report tells us that we are performing strongly, but it also tells us that there is always room to improve. We are not perfect - no government ever is - but we are on the right track and honoured to be recognised for the work we do.” FW de Klerk Foundation

As part of Mandela Month, Cloetesville Library, in collaboration with our Parks Department, hosted a tree planting programme at Dorothea Special School. The initiative honoured Nelson Mandela's legacy of service by giving back to the community while promoting environmental awareness in the process. Learners, teachers, library staff and officials worked side by side to plant trees. Together, we continue to nurture not only our environment, but also the spirit of community that Madiba inspired.

On Nelson Mandela Day, our Community Development team joined hands with Lord Acres Ministries and the Western Cape Department of Local Government to make a meaningful difference in Groendal. In the true spirit of Madiba, more than 300 community members received sandwiches and blankets, sharing warmth, compassion and hope with those who need it most. This initiative is a reminder that by working together, we can continue to honour Madiba's legacy of selfless service and build more caring communities.

Stellenbosch Municipality recently hosted a delegation from the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) as part of a bench-marking visit focused on waste management and recycling best practices. The visit formed part of Mpumalanga's efforts to strengthen waste diversion and recycling. The delegation visited the Stellenbosch Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to gain first-hand insight into the municipality's approach to waste diversion, recycling infrastructure, operational management and sustainable resource recovery. The session included technical engagements on governance, financial sustainability, technology, community participation, environmental compliance and the integration of waste reclaimers into the recycling value chain. Senior Manager: Waste Management, Mr Clayton Hendricks, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the importance of intergovernmental collaboration in advancing sustainable waste management across South Africa. “Bench-marking visits such as these create opportunities for municipalities and provinces to share knowledge, learn from one another and improve environmental outcomes. We are proud to showcase the work being done in Stellenbosch!" The visit underscores Stellenbosch Municipality's growing reputation as a leader in municipal waste management and resource recovery. The municipality's integrated approach has enabled the development of systems that support landfill diversion, recycling, environmental sustainability and local economic opportunities. See less
