Why push us onto the streets by forcing us out of our homes? Slum upgrading can be done with us, by us, if government gives support and resources. Forcing us out of our homes, with nowhere to go but under bridges, only creates more slums." About us
Slum Dwellers International (SDI) is a global network rooted in a transnational movement of the urban poor, working to build inclusive and resilient cities where the lives of slum dwellers are meaningfully improved. Our network is deeply committed to community-led, systemic change through the amplification of slum dwellers' voices and influence on citywide slum upgrading strategies that expand access to essential services, secure tenure, enhance climate resilience, and improve economic opportunities for the world’s one billion slum dwellers. As slum dwellers make up the majority of the urban population in cities across the Global South, improving their lives strengthens development outcomes for entire cities and advances global commitments to protecting both people and planet. SDI’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027 was co-created by our global network and centres the priorities of diverse slum dwellers. Guided by a holistic Theory of Change, the plan defines the impact we seek and how we will achieve it. To track our progress and embed learning in our organisation, we developed a Learning, Monitoring and Evaluation (LME) Playbook which fosters the generation of community-led, outcomes-focused evidence of impact.

Faced with growing waste management challenges, high youth unemployment, and limited economic opportunities, Nyalenda A needed a solution that addressed both environmental sustainability and community livelihoods. With the support of SDI Kenya and Muungano wa Wanavijiji, the local youth, young mothers, persons with disabilities, artisans, and casual labourers have come together to construct the Material Recovery Facility, creating jobs while strengthening ownership and inclusion. #Building Climate-Resilient Informal Settlements in Harare Watch and listen to Patience Mudimu, Director of Dialogue on Shelter (DOS) — a Slum Dwellers International affiliate — as she shares remarks during a stakeholder engagement on the principles of locally led adaptation. The engagement brought together stakeholders to gather critical inputs that will inform the design of the proposed pre-concept note, including climate risk analysis, adaptation measures, and implementation arrangements. “Climate change has disproportionately affected communities, and a collaborative approach is key to tackling its challenges,” said Mudimu. The proposed project, “Building Climate-Resilient Informal Human Settlements,” seeks to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities in Hopley, Hatcliffe Extension, Caledonia, Dzivarasekwa Extension, Epworth, and parts of Mbare through locally driven climate adaptation solutions. The engagement was hosted by Dialogue on Shelter in collaboration with the African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC) and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Participants included urban development experts, community representatives, and stakeholders working towards creating safer, more inclusive, and climate-resilient informal settlements in Harare. 📌 SDI Network News I Sikhona Mbane from the Community Organisation Resource Centre (CORC), shares with Pauline Omagwa from Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team how community-led drone mapping can support local advocacy. The South African SDI Federation, supported by CORC, is currently advocating for settlement upgrading across Kayamandi's wards in Stellenbosch, South Africa, including solar lighting, waste management and urban agriculture. For over a decade, SDI's Know Your City (KYC) campaign has worked toward building practical solutions. Now, new technologies like drone mapping add reach and speed, allowing SDI federations to produce faster evidence and data for decision-making which planners and city officials can use to develop plans and allocate budgets. This work is part of HOT's wider KYC partnership with SDI. 📢 SDI youth show leadership in the settlements they live and work in. The success of profiling 804 young people in just five days is remarkable by any measure. This is the unique capacity of movements and grassroots organisations like SDI, rooted in communities. But who this data serves matters as much as what it reveals. Community-led data collection carries with it a degree of accountability that conventional research often does not. It carries accountability to the settlements and to the young people who are not merely subjects of this exercise but active participants in it. At the Fourth #WMO International Workshop on Operational Climate Prediction in Arusha, Centre for Community Initiatives had the opportunity to showcase its ongoing work on advancing climate resilience in Tanzania. We presented findings on heat measurements and the relationship between cooking practices and extreme heat, highlighting the unique challenges faced by communities living in informal settlements. 📢 "UN leaders warned cities will determine whether the world meets the Sustainable Development Goals as urban populations rise from 58 per cent today to an expected 70 per cent by 2050. A high-level mid-term review found that progress requires a shift to more financing, stronger local governments and climate-resilient urban planning." ‼️
The UN General Assembly has renewed global commitment to the #NewUrbanAgenda. The High-level Meeting on the Midterm review of the New Urban Agenda sent a clear message that the framework is in place—now we must accelerate implementation. The General Assembly adopted, with 148 votes, a Political Declaration recommitting countries to the 2016 New Urban Agenda, warning that rapid urbanization is outpacing progress as more than 3 billion people still lack safe, adequate and affordable housing, over 330 million are homeless and more than 1 billion live in informal settlements and slums. The Political Declaration calls for: 🏘️ Prioritizing adequate housing for all 🌍 Building inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities 🤝 Empowering local and regional governments through multilevel governance 💰 Scaling up finance and investment for sustainable urbanization 📊 Strengthening data, innovation and partnerships to deliver results UN leaders warned cities will determine whether the world meets the Sustainable Development Goals as urban populations rise from 58 per cent today to an expected 70 per cent by 2050.
