The commissioning of Zambia's first solar-hydro hybrid power plant is an important milestone, not just for Globeleq and our partners at Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company Limited (LHPC), and Ministry of Energy Zambia but for Zambia's energy future and Africa's broader development. The project demonstrates how complementary technologies can work together to deliver more reliable and sustainable electricity. By integrating solar generation with the LHPC's existing hydropower plant, the facility makes better use of Zambia's renewable resources, strengthens energy security and showcases the potential of innovative energy solutions across the continent. “Our job is to remove barriers so that businesses can create jobs and drive growth.” A clear message from the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema at the Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF Zambia) where Globeleq participated as an anchor sponsor. The President positioned sustainable energy central to Zambia’s industrial ambitions, with a clear reminder to accelerate capacity towards the country’s 10,000 MW target. The president reaffirmed key reforms such as open access, enabling greater participation from IPPs and private power traders as well as emphasising the importance of transmission, interconnectors and overall system resilience, not just generation. The PPDF itself is a valuable platform convened by the Presidency to enable direct, solution focused engagement between government and the private sector, focused on identifying bottlenecks, unlocking investment and accelerating delivery through a more predictable operating environment. In his keynote, Managing Director of Business Development for Globeleq’s East Africa portfolio, Edouard Wenseleers reinforced the IPP’s commitment to support Zambia’s energy transition and growth agenda.
