Laval score, university academic performance score and overall admission value
Overall admission value
For applicants who have already attended a university program, the overall admission value is used to evaluate the strength of the academic record. It combines college or pre-university studies and university studies. The relative weight of each varies depending on how much university education has already been completed.
In Québec, college studies are evaluated based on the R score or its equivalent for other pre-university studies.
University studies are evaluated based on the CRU (university academic performance score). For studies at Université Laval, the CRU is specifically called the “Laval score.” The CRU takes into account grades obtained in all undergraduate programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree, diploma, certificate, or equivalent.
Calculating the overall admission value
Once you have completed 12 credits that count towards the CRU calculation in an undergraduate program that leads to a certificate, diploma, or bachelor’s degree, your overall admission value will consist mainly of your R score, but will also include your CRU, calculated based on the courses taken in university. Prior to reaching the 12-credit threshold, your academic record consists of your R score or equivalent.
Each university credit that counts towards the CRU calculation is worth 2% of the overall value. Once you have completed 50 university credits that count towards the CRU calculation, the overall admission value will be based entirely on the CRU and the R score will no longer be taken into account.
Calculating the university academic performance score or Laval score
The university academic performance score (CRU or Laval score) is not calculated until an admission application is submitted for a limited enrolment program. It is calculated when your file is complete and being analyzed. The score is not calculated if the application is rejected because the file is missing an element or the applicant does not meet an admission requirement or selection criterion. For the undergraduate doctorate in medicine, only the academic record of applicants selected based on the Casper results will be analyzed.
Specifications about the Laval score
The Laval score is calculated for studies completed at Université Laval. It takes into account your grades from each semester you were registered in an undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree, diploma, or certificate, even if you completed your studies several years ago, and even if you returned to college after studying at university.
Pre-university courses (qualifying courses) do not count towards the Laval score. However, the grades for these courses are taken into account in the overall analysis of the file for eligible mature students.
Graduate courses are not factored into the Laval score.
Your Laval score calculation does not include any courses taken:
- At the graduate level
- Exclusively as part of a short program
- As part of a special program (for example, the Professional Order Integration Program)
- Exclusively as a non-degree student
The Laval score is calculated using your semester GPA:
- The semester GPA is an overall grade calculated at the end of each semester for all courses of the same level (undergraduate or graduate) you were enrolled in during the semester and for which you received a numerical grade. It can range from 0 to 4.33.
- Courses that are graded as “pass” or “fail” have no numerical value.
- For the purposes of calculating the Laval score, the GPA is linked to your main program each semester.
The calculation counts each course only once.

Specifications about the university academic performance score
For studies completed at another university, the admission file is evaluated based on the CRU (university academic performance score).
The CRU calculation takes into account your grades for studies in an undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree, diploma, or certificate, even if you completed your studies several years ago, and even if you returned to college after studying at university.
The calculation does not include any courses taken:
- As part of a graduate program
- Exclusively as part of a short program
- As part of a special program (for example, the Professional Order Integration Program)
- Exclusively as a non-degree student
The GPA used for the calculation is the cumulative GPA for each program. The GPA is linked to your program. We use benchmarks calculated at Université Laval. If the program in question is not offered at Université Laval, the benchmarks of a comparable program are used to calculate the CRU.
We use the benchmarks from your most recent semester enrolled in a given program. For example, if the most recent semester of enrolment on your transcript is fall 2020, we use the benchmarks for 2020. If the most recent semester is fall 2021, we use the benchmarks for 2021. If you participated in more than one university program, we use the benchmarks corresponding to the most recent semester of enrolment for each program.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your Laval score takes into account your grades from every semester you were enrolled as a student, even for studies completed years ago.
It is not used in the calculation. Your semester GPA is used instead.

No.
Certain programs have admission requirements that prevent a DEC holder from being immediately eligible. This applies to the following programs:
- Financial Analysis (certificate)
- Accounting – Introduction to the Profession (certificate)
- International Development and Humanitarian Action (certificate no longer offered)
- Vocational and Technical Education (certificate and bachelor’s; except for holders of a technical DEC - programs no longer offered)
- Finance (certificate)
- Supply Chain Management (certificate)
- Organizational Management (certificate)
- Human Resources Management (certificate)
- Journalism (certificate)
- Change Leadership (certificate)
- Labour Relations (certificate no longer offered)
- Industrial Relations (certificate – if studies completed before Winter 2018)
For these programs the Laval score is based on the IFD established using students’ R score if they were enrolled in the past five years.
Yes, if you took them in the same semester as courses that are part of your main program.
No, graduate-level courses are not included in your Laval score calculation. Certain programs account for them according to terms posted on the faculty websites, when they apply.
We use the benchmarks from your most recent semester enrolled in a given program. For example, if the most recent semester of enrolment on your transcript is Fall 2020, we use the benchmarks for 2020. If the most recent semester is Fall 2019, we use the benchmarks for 2019. If you participated in more than one university program, we use the benchmarks corresponding to the most recent semester of enrolment for each program. The GPA used for the calculation is the cumulative GPA for each program.
We use the benchmarks of a comparable program offered at Université Laval to calculate your university academic performance score (CRU).
Your GPA is converted according to the following principle: every letter grade (A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, etc.) is considered equal from one university to another. So an A from your current university equals an A at Université Laval. The numerical value of your GPA is converted on a linear basis, so a GPA that translates to a bit above a B at your current university is converted to a GPA that is a bit above a B at Université Laval. Here are a few examples:
Example 1: A student from the University of Ottawa has a GPA of 7. This corresponds to a B+ on the university’s scale. So the student’s GPA will be converted to a B+ here at Université Laval, which equals 3.33.
Example 2: A student from McGill University has a GPA of 3.65. This corresponds to between a B+ and an A-, a little closer to an A-, on the university’s scale. So the student’s GPA will be converted to one that is between B+ and A- in our grading system.
Example 3: A student from McGill University has a GPA of 4. In this university’s scale, this corresponds to the maximum grade of A. So the student’s GPA will be converted to A+ in our grading system.
The university credits we consider are those associated with learning activities that have a numerical grade that counts toward the Laval score. Credits for activities graded on a pass/fail basis are not considered because they do not go into the GPA calculation.
The Laval score is calculated for undergraduate programs leading to a bachelor’s degree, diploma, or certificate. It does not include any courses taken:
- At the graduate level
- Exclusively as part of short programs
- In special programs, such as abroad-only programs or customized programs for specific cohorts
- Exclusively as a non-degree student
- As qualifying (pre-university) courses
Note: Such applicants will be compared to college students and will have to meet the college student selection criteria. However, they are still considered university applicants and must adhere to any admission deadlines set for that category.
The calculation of the overall admission value for a student is based on their R score and their different Laval scores, according to the number of credits they were enrolled in during each semester of university.
We will use the R score that the applicant would have had if they were leaving college without having earned any university credits.
