Origin puts its media buying on autopilot with Moby Media Buyer

Origin grew paid spend 40% and ROAS 30% year over year with Triple Whale and Moby Media Buyer, and now runs 100% of its Meta and Google budgets on autopilot.

Origin is a made-in-America apparel company with factories in North Carolina and Maine. The company began with jujitsu gis and has expanded into boots, jeans, hoodies, and other menswear, all sourced and assembled domestically.

The company is bootstrapped, vertically integrated, and runs paid media across Meta, Google, and Microsoft Ads. Justin Parker, Director of Ecommerce, oversees paid media and works across marketing, product, and operations.

Media buying carried the biggest risk on budget

For Justin Parker, paid media was one of Origin’s largest budget items, and he wanted to improve performance without giving up control. Buying decisions had to account for more than a channel’s reported return: Origin needed new customers, profitable growth, and demand for products it could actually keep in stock. Justin was also helping connect marketing, product, and operations, leaving limited time to review every campaign and pursue new ideas.

“Media buying is the single biggest ticket item that we have on our budget, so there’s a lot of risk associated with getting it right.”

Any automated buying process would need to respect Origin’s budget limits and protect its creativity. The team also needed to understand and challenge its decisions. Justin was open to automation, but he expected to spend a long time reviewing recommendations before allowing it to act.

Moby Media Buyer started with recommendations and earned more control

A longtime Triple Whale customer, Justin joined the early rollout of Moby Media Buyer to improve paid media and save his team time. Origin started with recommendations, tested limited automation, and expanded only as the team gained confidence.

Moby Media Buyer soon became part of Origin’s daily buying process. It worked from the business goals, inventory priorities, and budget limits the team supplied. Justin could ask for the reasoning behind the action, review its supporting metrics, and challenge outside metrics against Origin’s own plan. Alongside that work, he used Moby AI to bring customer feedback and operational data into analyses the wider team could use.

How Origin put Moby Media Buyer to work

Today, Moby Media Buyer handles the daily buying across Meta and Google. Justin and his team set the goals, review performance, and decide what to test next.

Decide what Origin is optimizing for

Setting up Moby Media Buyer forced Origin to rethink how it bought media. The team had to decide what it was optimizing for: the highest ROAS at any cost, new customers, or a fixed budget with a minimum ROAS below which spend should stop. Justin calls the setup a “gut check” on how the team was buying placements, and says redefining those goals was a major benefit on its own.

Build trust before handing over execution

Origin first used Moby Media Buyer to review recommendations and manually apply selected changes. The next step was one campaign, with limits on daily spend and budget changes, and no permission to introduce new creative or copy. After reviewing the results and refining the guardrails, the team expanded to a full channel and then across Meta and Google.

Justin had expected to stay in copilot for a year. He says the move to full autonomy took about two to three months. Being able to ask what changed, why, and which metrics supported the decision helped him build trust at his own pace.

Justin calls the approach “crawl, walk, run.” Asked whether he would have seen the same results if he had approved every change over the past six months, he said no. He also values seeing every action and its history in one place over time, which he says gives him security in his role.

“Having Moby Media Buyer monitor things in real time on a reliable schedule lets us lean into the spend opportunities we should be scaling into. At the same time, it plays defense and cuts waste on the things we need to pause sooner rather than later.”

Make channel decisions against the business plan

Origin gave Moby Media Buyer its acquisition goals, inventory priorities, and marketing calendar so it could evaluate channels in the context of the whole business. It flagged branded search as potentially capturing existing demand rather than generating new sales. Justin is clear that this began as an inference from the available signals; he says later incrementality testing supported it. The team also used metrics suited to each campaign’s funnel position rather than judging every campaign the same way.

Origin acted on that finding early in the rollout, moving spend out of branded search and into Meta. When Meta’s efficiency dropped in the spring, Moby Media Buyer shifted budget back to Google, which Justin says has also become much more efficient since Moby Media Buyer took over. He sums up the logic this way:

“You either perform, or you don’t get the money. We’re going to give it to another channel that’s performing.” — Justin Parker, Director of Ecommerce, Origin

The same standard applies to new proposals. When Google recommended more Demand Gen spend ahead of Labor Day, Justin asked Moby Media Buyer to review it. It advised against most of the additional spend because it didn’t fit Origin’s goals, even though the channel had room to scale. It also spotted a missing prospecting campaign for the fall knit line, showing where the team needed to create something new.

Give the paid media team room to do more

As Moby Media Buyer took on more daily buying work, Origin’s assistant director of paid media began spending more time on new opportunities and the marketing calendar. Justin described the role as moving toward assistant director of marketing. The shift mattered because the team could spend less time managing individual adjustments and more time deciding what to try next.

Let every action teach the system

Because Moby Media Buyer is always on, it keeps a concrete record of what happened and what results followed. Justin contrasts that with media buying that runs on instinct more than on data and history. He also says controlled business context, including PII guardrails, expense guardrails, and uploaded files, is part of why he trusts the system.

Moby Media Buyer follows each action with check-ins at 1, 3, 7, and 14 days later, comparing the result with the hypothesis behind the change. It logs the lessons, and a daily job reviews them for duplicates and contradictions. Justin says he can see the results in the tickets he reads now, and that this history is why teams should start early. Every day without it, he says, is a day not spent building that history and context.

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.” — Justin Parker, Director of Ecommerce, Origin

Bring the same business context to the wider team

Beyond media buying, Justin uses Moby to work with customer feedback, purchase orders, and product tech packs. In one product review, an analysis of reviews and returns flagged a possible shrinkage issue in light-wash denim and suggested changes for the product team to investigate. Shared dashboards help colleagues work through these findings without asking Justin to rebuild each analysis.

Origin has also used Moby to create landing pages from its own creative, customer UGC, and product information, with brand guidelines and human review in place. These are broader Moby use cases that support the team alongside Moby Media Buyer’s paid media work.

Moby Media Buyer also raises ideas outside paid media through its daily and weekly automation rules. Recently, it suggested a refer-a-friend program, which Justin agreed with. He compares it to an employee who finishes assigned work and then looks for other ways to help the business.

Results: More spend, better return, and more time to plan

  • Paid spend and ROAS both rose year over year
  • Budget moved between Meta and Google as performance changed
  • The paid media team spends more time on planning and new opportunities

Origin reports 40% higher paid spend and 30% higher ROAS year over year. The business increased its paid media investment while improving return per dollar spent, with 100% of its Meta and Google budgets now managed on autopilot within the team’s goals and guardrails.

The change also gave the paid media team more time to plan and pursue new opportunities. Moby Media Buyer handled more of the daily execution, while Justin and his colleagues used the wider Triple Whale platform to answer questions across marketing, product, and operations. The value extended from better media performance to how the team spent its time.

“Moby Media Buyer understands our business and works within our goals and guardrails. We can ask why it made a decision and see the reasoning. We’re spending more with better ROAS, and our team has more time to focus on new opportunities.”
