Daniel May once again manages to surprise me— I expected a wild taboo romp and got this heartfelt, wistful yearning that only enhanced the spice. I’m not a fan of age gap teacher-student shit and yet he managed to get me to not only like this couple but really crave more for them. His shorts are rarely dual pov and this is one of the few ones I wished was dual pov even though I think it would ruin the twist (sorta) at the end. As it is, it’s one of the sweeter romances he’s written. (Edit: minus the orc series that just came out. 😉)

3.5/5. Daniel May is, imho, the King of Smutty Shorts. Most of the scenes in this weren’t it for me, but if you like taboo brother stuff (not me), being dropped in the middle of some long-brewing untapped desires (I do indeed), and also a general unrepentant lack of lube (😅), then this is the ideal short for you. Glad I read it because I’m always pleasantly surprised by the Unfolding of Things but this is probably not one that I will return to often.

It’s hot and sweet and the right amount of the usual “wft is going on here” that comes with Daniel May fantasy works! Did I want more? Yes. But I’m also happy that this short came with a ton of world building and also we got domesticity and offspring, so wooo! 🥳

I really enjoyed all the little world building nuggets and the surprise twist at the end that I’m not mad at. Once again the short story feels too short, would happily read a whole novel around these three.

Shifted sex isn’t quite my thing BUT once again Daniel May manages to take the reader on a wild smutty ride. The semi-reluctant throuple-ship is the described beautifully. As with almost all of his shorts, I would 100% read a full novels worth of these three if Daniel ever wrote one!
  • Vestal on Oct. 15, 2025

This is definitely one of the dark stories, closer to the tone of the of SNVC book (iykyk), where not everything is explained and the sexual violence (especially to a side character) is really explicit and heavy. And then when Hae does couple with his mysterious partner, he might not have fully known what he was consenting to lololololol. As with all of daniel may fantasy shorts it has just the right amount of “wft is going on here” to hook you in. And so of course I wanted more after it ended— like more of the world Daniel was building but also a little more closure to Hae’s journey. But also wherever Maes Hill and Drusa are going can’t be worse than what Drusa faced in the book, so I guess that’s enough to satisfy me 😆.

It was fun, hot and short. Daniel May is great at writing body mod, even the “lighter” versions like simple piercings.
  • Fair Game on Oct. 17, 2025

This had a nice set of twists, Daniel May keeps the story action-focused but he also manages to pack in a lot of backstory and world building. Great story for fans of mindbreak, very dubious consent, and just all around fuckery.
  • Rabbit Season on Oct. 17, 2025

What a scorchingly hot, obsessive, dubcon-y short story. I kinda wish we’d gotten a tiny bit for Ford’s POV but then again, not having is POV is kinda the whole point of the dubcon. Art’s role in everything was the cherry on top. One of the few short stories by Daniel May that felt all wrapped up and complete by the end. (Of course, I wanted more anyways haha ).
  • Pet on Oct. 17, 2025

Definitely one of the darker erotic shorts from Daniel, the whole thing is dub and noncon and with some more extreme mindbreak stuff. The boss’s utter obsession with Angel is borderline sweet and Angel’s decision at the end is enough for me to feel okay with it. The smut writing is top tier as well. finally poor Angel has something he can be good at. (Mild spoiler but: I do wonder like where his family and friends are? Will he ever see them or is he stuck?)
  • Different Breed on Oct. 17, 2025

Seven has literally stolen my heart (-!; Jay’s) from day one. It’s technically omegaverse but due to the set up of the world, but also not since there doesn’t seem to be anything but alphas in this world. And alphas that are intentionally “de-alpha-ed” to the point that they meet the same fate that a lot of omegas would meet in more stereotypical dark abo book. Everything is delightfully topsy-turvy and the right amount of morally depraved. I loved reading about Jay being torn by this morality and unable to stop himself from trying to un-turvy the topsy. Seven being confused and very reluctant is just 🥹 I read all currently available parts (1-3) at once that’s how addicting their dynamic is. Honestly I would read 3 whole full length novels set in this world even if it is very dark.

Jay and Seven take on the outside world! Even though it felt like the story slowed down, I really appreciated the deeper world building and lore. Jay’s growing infatuation with Seven is cute. To be fair, he did pick out the ideal alpha/man, soooo. Once again, I’d read 3 whole novels based on Seven and Jay (and the larger plot around the fate of alphas as a whole).
  • Different Breed: III on Oct. 18, 2025

If you’ve made it this far in the Different Breed series, it’s probably because you dig the inverted power dynamics of this omega-ish-verse world that Daniel May has cooked up and this third chapter delivers more of the good stuff. Although not as solid as the first installment, I’d say this third one feels way more momentous compared to the second. Jay’s increasing disregard for the rulebook is endearing, even as he seems to be at the precipice of “fuck around and find out”, literally. My hope is that Jay doesn’t go to the route his friend suggested but also waits before crossing the final line/rule. I don’t think either he or Seven are prepared for that and I like desperately need that first time to NOT end in utter disaster 😭😭 I love Seven’s ability to steal the show despite not being the POV character. 🥰 A note to Daniel May: I am once again making my appeal to not just turn this into a full novel but also maybe write like at least… another two full novels?
  • Dump Your Boyfriend on Oct. 18, 2025

It’s a cute story where things become progressively hotter and the MC is in denial/delulu about the trajectory of the relationship with the guy he is tutoring. Not nearly as dark as some of this author’s catalogue, so read this when you want something contemporary but sweet(er). note that there is cheating involved, in case that’s a hard pass for some readers.
  • Play Stupid Games on Oct. 18, 2025

I mean it’s rough sex, some of the most graffic throat shit I’ve read. But Daniel May managed to suck me in (pun intended?) and root for Jules getting exactlyyytt what he wanted, even if what I wanted was hard (yes, pun intended) to read.
