1
Introduction
A composite is a material made up of two main
components: a matrix, which binds and protects
the material, and a reinforcement, which provides
strength and rigidity. The combination of these
two elements makes it possible to obtain overall
properties that are superior to those of each
component taken separately.
2
Characterization Techniques
1 Raman Spectroscopy :
Raman spectroscopy illuminates the
composite with a laser and measures the
scattered light, revealing the vibrations of
chemical bonds in order to identify the
structure of the matrix and the
reinforcements, as well as any possible
defects.
3
Characterization Techniques
2 Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS)
EDS analyzes the local elemental composition
of the composite by detecting the X-rays
emitted by atoms when they are excited by an
electron beam, allowing the identification of
the distribution of elements in the matrix and
the reinforcements.
4
Characterization Techniques
3 Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) :
FTIR measures the absorption of infrared light
by the chemical bonds in the matrix and
reinforcements, allowing the identification of
functional groups and the study of matrix–fiber
interactions.
5
Characterization Techniques
4 X-ray Diffraction (XRD):
XRD illuminates the composite with X-rays
and measures their diffraction by the crystals
present, allowing the identification of the
crystalline phases of the reinforcements and the
structure of the matrix.
6
Characterization Techniques
Conclusion :
Characterization techniques help analyze the structure of
composites. They are essential for controlling their quality
and improving their performance.
