2
INTEGERS
• The word integer is originated from the
Latin word “Integer” which means whole
or intact.
• Integers is a special set of numbers
comprising zero, positive numbers and
negative numbers.
• The integers are represented by the
symbol ‘Z’.

Real Numbers
• Real numbers can be defined as the union
of both rational and irrational numbers.
• They can be both positive or negative and
are denoted by the symbol “R”.
• Some of the examples of real numbers are
23, -12, 6.99, 5/2, π, and so on.

8
Rational Numbers
• a type of real numbers, which is in the
form of p / q where q ≠ 0.

• Some examples of rational numbers are -

1/2, 3/4, 5/8,...

9
Rational Numbers
• All decimals are not rational numbers.
Only those decimals that can be
expressed as a fraction in which the
numerator is an integer and the
denominator is a non-zero integer are
rational numbers.

DEDEKIND CUTS
• The method of “Dedekind cuts” first developed by
Richard Dedekind (though he just called them
“cuts”)
• Dedekind’s Cut is a method for defining real
numbers by dividing the set of rational numbers
into two non-empty sets, typically referred to as
“lower set” and the “upper set.”

16
17
CAUCHY SEQUENCE

• Every set of all equivalent Cauchy

sequences defines a real number.
