Micro teaching Skill of introduction

What is Micro Teaching Skill of introduction ?

The microteaching skill of the introduction is also known as the skill of set
induction. It is related to the beginning of class teaching. If the beginning
of class teaching is effective then the outcomes of the teaching- learning
process can be estimated very clearly.
Meaning of set induction

Induction –
Induction is made of Induct –
To introduce
Inducting or being inducted
The action of inducing something
The action of introducing someone to a post or organization
Induction

In Science –
the production of an electric or magnetic state in an object by
bringing an electrified or magnetized object close to but not
touching it.
Set Induction

• Set induction is about preparation when the students are set,

they are ready to learn. Thus, Set induction brings them into
the right mind set.
• It provides a reference point between what the student
knows and the new material/ knowledge. Thus, Set
Induction is the process of gaining students attention at the
beginning of the class.
Objectives of the Introduction Skill

To motivate, to make them alert, Ready,

Prepare to get knowledge,
Interrelation between past and present
To establish rapport with students
Activities before Introducing
the lesson
Greeting
Accepting Greetings
Securing attention and giving instructions
Establishing rapport
 Ensuring facilities like chalk, Duster, Aids, Apparatus etc.
 Completing Black Board Entries i.e.- Date, Class, Subject, Period,
Duration and only title – ‘Topic’
Introducing the lesson

To induce mental and physical set the teacher

should introduce the lesson keeping the following
components in view :
Components

1. Using previous knowledge of the learner.

2. Using appropriate devices.
3. Using logical and psychological sequence.
4. Using relevant statements.
5. Continuity in the Statements and Question
1. Importance of Previous knowledge-

‘Previous knowledge’ is also known as ‘Entering

Behaviour’

Previous knowledge means the subject matter already

studied along with all previous experiences.

Mind can not receive any new knowledge unless there is

continuity with the relevant previous knowledge.
Note:
Teacher should be aware of the previous knowledge and
previous experiences of the pupils.

While writing the previous knowledge, teacher should

keep in mind the present topic and the teaching objectives.
2. Using appropriate devices.

a) Examples
b)Questioning, Illustrating etc.
(No irrelevant questions asked)
c) Story ,Anecdotes etc.
d) Role-playing
Dramatization etc.
2. Using appropriate devices

e) Audio-Visual aids i.e. Magazines, News, Paper cuttings,

Maps, Globe Chart, Model, Picture, Object, Sketch on B/B
etc.
f) Experiment Demonstration etc.
3. Logical and Psychological sequence-

 To maintain continuity some Maxims of Teaching are used.

 From Known to Unknown
 From Simple to Complex
 From Concrete to Abstract
 From Specific to General
 From Whole to Part
3. Logical and Psychological sequence-

From Known to Unknown- This is a maxim that throws light on

previous and acquired knowledge that the students might have. The
students might know some concepts and the teachers should
introduce the unknown through the known concepts.

From Simple to Complex - It is a given that simple concepts are

taught first and then teachers move on to complex topics. For
example, the story is a simple concept (relatively) and the figures
and analysis is a complex concept. Teachers must gradually
increase the complexity.
3. Logical and Psychological sequence-

From Concrete to Abstract- Abstract concepts are those that are

intangible. It cannot be seen since it does not have a physical
form. For example - infinity, BODMAS, and likewise are abstract
concepts whereas numbers and counting, etc. are concrete and
can be taught using physical objects.

From Specific to General-

3. Logical and Psychological sequence-

Proper Sequencing

The ideas, questions and statements which are made for starting
the lesson must have coordination otherwise students can be
misleading in the classroom. Questions should be arrange in
proper sequencing.
4. Relevant statement

 Related to Subject , Topic & teaching objectives.

 No irrelevant statements made.
 This is very important for a teacher that there should be a relation
between his statement and teaching objectives otherwise students
cannot make any judgment about the teaching topic.
 One more thing the teacher’s statement must be related to objectives
otherwise the teaching topic will not come out properly among students.
5. Continuity in the Statements
and Questions

Statements and Questions must be inter-related

5. . Duration of introduction

The duration of the introduction must not be too short and

too long, it must be in such a way that the students take
interest and get motivated enough so that a teacher can
start the lesson
5. Suggestions for Introduction Skill

 Number of question must be at least 3 and maximum 5 in

number.
 Questions to be asked in the introduction should be inter-
related.
 Last question must be ‘Problematic’.
