Understanding Ultrasonic Meters

This presentation contains confidential information about ultrasonic meters and is intended for internal use only. It explains the main components of ultrasonic meters, their operation, and the principles of differential transit time measurement. The document emphasizes the importance of understanding the physics behind the measurements while prohibiting external distribution.

 How Ultrasonic Meters Work

Division of EMERSON PROCESS MANAGEMENT

Ultrasound is used to avoid Frequency

Contention with the standard pipeline

frequencies caused by valves, regulators,

probes, conditioners, sharp flange

mismatches, flange gasket protrusions and

compressor noise.

Pairs of ultrasound transducer
are aimed at each other
diagonally across a precision
meter body giving an upstream
and a downstream direction
when sound is sent and timed
in each direction

Differential Transit Time Measurement
 The time of sound wave flight is measured from T1 to T2
 The time of sound wave flight is measured from T2 to T1
 T1 to T2 flight time is subtracted from T2 to T1’s flight time
 The difference in time over the fixed sound path distance is proportional
to the velocity along the path line
 At zero flow: The two direction’s subtraction = 0
 When flowing: It takes longer to travel against the flow than with the
flow.
 If you double the velocity…you will double the time difference

Daniel Division of EMERSON PROCESS MANAGEMENT

As axial flow occurs; it takes longer to go
against the flow and less time to go with the
flow, between the fixed distance transducer Transit Time Downstream =
pairs. Zero flow = same time each way. “Time 1,050 usec
Difference” is proportional to flow velocity.
