Wear Debris Analysis

Wear debris analysis examines the size, shape, and composition of material that enters lubricants due to machine wear. Different wear mechanisms produce characteristic debris features: mild lubricated wear yields thin flakes while fatigue wear produces more equiaxed particles. Analyzing wear debris provides a cost-effective way to monitor mechanical condition and understand tribology, though it lacks some of the detailed information available from vibration analysis.

Wear debris analysis

Wear
• Plastic deformation at the interface often
leads to wear, i.e., deformation induced wear.
• Wear can also be caused by chemical
processes.
• There are many different kinds of wear
mechanisms
• We have to analyze these wear mechanisms
using mechanics, thermodynamics, etc.
Wear Mechanisms
• Abrasive wear
- polishing, scratching, grinding, etc.
• Adhesive wear
• Cavitation ( Interaction with fluid)
• Corrosive wear( Chemical nature)
• Erosive wear
• Fatigue
-delamination
Wear debris analysis
• When a machine wears, material from
the contacting surfaces enters the
lubricant.
• The forces, material and geometry of the
wear site all influence the size, shape and
quality of the final wear product.
Wear debris analysis
• Mild-lubricated wear -- thin flake-like
debris
• Fatigue wear ---- more equi-axed particles

• Fatigue wear in rolling --- near spherical

particles
Wear debris analysis
• Wear debris analysis is a useful and cost
effective mechanical condition monitoring
technique
• However, compared with the
complementary technique of vibration
analysis, little information is available to
the engineers that describes the technical
details of wear debris analysis
Advantages of wear debris analysis

• There is no large capital investment

risked in evaluating the wear debris
analysis
• No requirement for a trained specialist
• It can also be a useful technique to
understand tribology and to identifying
lubrication problem
