Tire Impressions
Reveals more than you think!
Tire Impression Evidence
Getaway cars, hit and runs,
house breaks, murders…
most criminals use a
vehicle when they commit
a crime. This means the
possibility of leaving their
tire impressions behind.
Tire Tracks vs Tire Tread Patterns
Tires provide CSI with two
forms of evidence:
When a car drives, it may
leave behind... both tire

Tire Tread Patterns
What can they tell us?
Tire Tread Patterns
Every brand of tire has a different
tread pattern. The type (brand) of
tire can be identified by its pattern.

Tire Tread Patterns
There are thousands of tires made
of the same brand, so this is class
evidence.
But, it can still be helpful for CSI
to compare the brand of tire
found at the scene to the tire
brand on a possible suspect’s
car.
Tire Tread Patterns
But that is not all!
As tires are used, they develop unique marks
from random damage they endure on the road.
These marks can show up in the tread pattern
left at a scene. They are unique to a single tire!
This means a tread pattern can also be...

Wear Bars
Many tire molds include wear bars.
As the tire ages, the tread wears
away, until the wear bars become
even with the tread. That means it is
time for new tires!
Relative depth of the wear bar can be
measured in 3D tire impressions -

What can they tell us?
Tire Tracks Evidence
Tire tracks can tell
investigators a lot about
the car that left them...
● Direction the car went
● The size of the vehicle
● Turning diameter

Determine the Size of the Vehicle
Some situations allow
investigators to measure the
turning diameter of a vehicle -
the diameter of the circle made
when the steering wheel is fully
turned.
This provides another
indication of a vehicle's size.
