Rizal left Manila for Hong Kong on February 3, 1888. He arrived in Hong Kong on February 8th and stayed at the Victoria Hotel. While in Hong Kong, Rizal was shadowed by a Spanish spy named Jose Sains de Veranda. On February 18th, Rizal visited Macau where he toured various sites and stayed with a Filipino man married to a Portuguese woman. Rizal returned to Hong Kong on February 20th where he studied Chinese culture before departing for Japan on February 22nd aboard an American steamer called the Oceanic.

February 3, 1888 - Rizal left Manila for Hong Kong on


board the Zafiro.
February 7- they stopover at Amoy, it was raining hard
and Rizal was not feeling well.
February 8 - Rizal arrived in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong – “is a small, but very clean city”.


Victoria Hotel – where Rizal stayed when he was in
Hong Kong.

▰ Rizal was forced to leave his country for a second time.


▰ At age of 27, Rizal practiced physician and recognized
man-of-letters, but also became embittered victim of
human iniquities, a disillusioned dreamer, a
frustrated reformer.
▰ February 16 - Rizal wrote a letter to Blumentritt

Jose Sains de Veranda- a Spaniard, who was the former


secretary of Governor General Terrero, shadowed Rizal’s
movement in Hong Kong. It is believed that he was
commissioned by the Spanish authorities to spy on Rizal.

February 18 - Rizal accompanied by Basa, boarded the


ferry steamer Kiu Kiang for Macau.
Rizal visited the theater, casino, cathedral and churches,
pagodas, botanical garden and bazaars, he also saw the
famous Grotto of Camoens.

Rizal said Macau is small, low, and gloomy.


Rizal and Basa stayed in home of Don Juan Francisco
Lecaros.
▰Don Juan Francisco Lecaros
- A Filipino gentleman married a Portuguese lady.
- Rich and spent his days cultivating plants and flowers
which came from the Philippines.

February 19 - he witnessed a catholic procession, in


which the devotees dressed in blue and purple dresses and
were carrying unlighted candles
February 20 - Rizal and Basa returned in Hong Kong
again on board the ferry steamer Kiu Kiang. He studied
Chinese life, language, drama, and customs.
