Asking questions is one of the most important skills in
communication. This video will teach you the most common
structures for asking questions in English, including those that
can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no" and those that
begin with Wh- words to get specific information.
ጥያቄዎችን መጠየቅ በመግባባት ውስጥ በጣም አስፈላጊ ከሆኑ ክህሎቶች አንዱ ነው። በዚህ

These questions can only be answered with a "yes" or "no."
We use the auxiliary verbs do, does, and did to ask questions
in the simple present and simple past tenses.
እነዚህ ጥያቄዎች በ"አዎ" ወይም "አይ" ብቻ ሊመለሱ ይችላሉ። do፣ does እና did
የሚሉትን ረዳት ግሶች እንጠቀማለን።
➢ Structure: Do/Does/Did + subject + base verb?
Example:
• Do you like coffee?
ቡና ትወዳለህ/ጂያለሽ?
• Does she work here?
እዚህ ትሰራለች?
• Did you finish your homework?
የቤት ስራህን/ሽን ጨረስክ/ሽ?
• Did they go to the party?
ወደ ፓርቲው ሄዱ?
• Does he play soccer?
እግር ኳስ ይጫወታል?

These questions use the verb to be (am, is, are) and are used
for asking about a state of being, a description, or an
ongoing action in the present continuous tense.
እነዚህ ጥያቄዎች የመሆን ግስን (am፣ is፣ are) ይጠቀማሉ።
➢ Structure: Am/Is/Are + subject + noun/adjective/verb-
ing?
Example:
• Are you a student?
ተማሪ ነህ/ሽ?
• Is he busy right now?
አሁን በስራ ተጠምዷል?
• Are they working on the project?
በፕሮጀክቱ ላይ እየሰሩ ነው?
• Am I late for the meeting?
ለስብሰባው ዘግይቻለሁ?
• Is the movie good?

Wh- questions are used to get specific information. They
begin with a Wh- word such as what, where, when, why, who,
or how. These questions can be used with both do/does/did
and am/is/are.
Wh- ጥያቄዎች ተጨማሪ መረጃ/ማብራሪያ ለማግኘት ያገለግላሉ። እንደ what, where,
when, why, who ወይም how ባሉ Wh- ቃል ይጀምራሉ። እነዚህ ጥያቄዎች
ከdo/does/did እና ከam/is/are ጋር ሊያገለግሉ ይችላሉ።
➢ Structure with Do/Does/Did: Wh-word + do/does/did +
subject + base verb?
➢ Structure with Am/Is/Are: Wh-word + am/is/are + subject
+ [noun/adjective/verb-ing]?

ምን ትፈልጋለህ/ጊያለሽ?
• Where does he live?
የት ነው የሚኖረው?
• What is your name?
ስምህ/ሽ ማን/ምንድን ነው?
• Where are they going?
ወዴት እየሄዱ ነው?
• How is the weather today?
ዛሬ የአየር ሁኔታው እንዴት ነው?

When who or what is the subject of the question (the person
or thing doing the action), you do not use the auxiliary verbs
do, does, or did. The structure is simpler.
who ወይም what የጥያቄው subject (ድርጊቱን የሚፈጽመው ሰው ወይም ነገር)
ሲሆኑ፣ do፣ does ወይም did የሚሉትን ረዳት ግሶች አይጠቀሙም።
➢ Structure: Who/What + main verb?
Example:
• Who opened the door?
በሩን ማን ከፈተ?
• What happened?
ምን ተከሰተ?
• Who called you?
ማን ደወለልህ/ልሽ?
• What made that noise?
ያን ድምጽ ማን/ምን አወጣ?
• Who wrote that book?
ያን መጽሐፍ ማን ጻፈው?
