INSTRUCTION: Read the following passage, and answer the questions on it.
Shild was a mighty sailor who travelled to Denmark alone as a child, banished
on a ship, but he grew, lived and became rich and honored. He married a Dane that
bore him a son named Beo.
Prince Beo grew and became stronger than his father. The father’s soldiers
were wound around him. Prince Beo built his future, wisely open-handed,
protected in war, earned fame and shaped his wealth with a sword.
When Shild, Beo’s father died, the Danes accorded him deserved honors. They
heaped up treasures: helmets, hooked swords and coats of mail and armors his
troops had brought from the ends of the earth by his corpse. The corpse was laid on
a ship and set adrift as he had commanded while he was alive. Beo became king
after his father and had four sons and one daughter. The first son was Hrothgar,
followed by Healdane, Herga and Halga with their lone sister, Yrs. These young
men were all as brave as wounded lions. Their sister, Yrs, grew and became queen
of Sweden when she got married to King Oneala.
Hrothger took the throne after Beo. He built a gigantic mead hall, Herot, and
declared a dedication banquet after successes over all enemies. That was a big
occasion which drew his men, citizens and friends from far and near. The music
played at the banquet was so loud that it awoke a monster, Grendel, who had been
asleep in the marsh in a pool. It came to the city. Women, children and fathers ran
away for nothing could resist Grendel. It killed Hrothgar’s soldiers and the
remnants fled. But God protected Hrothgar who sat sadly on his throne, looking
afar from day to day.
The news went out about Grendel. The man, Beowulf, a follower of Beo’s
uncle, Higlac, heard the news of the beast and came to Denmark. He fought and
overcame the beast and it’s supporting agents. Then the Danes became free once
again.
