General Knowledge and Reading Skills
Study Guide
General Knowledge in the IMAT covers a very broad range of cultural,
historical, political, social, and contemporary topics. Unlike scientific
subjects, this section has no fixed syllabus and no defined limits.
Questions may come from major historical events, well-known public
figures, global institutions, basic economics, or current world issues.

The section contains 4 questions total, shared between General

Knowledge and Reading Skills.

Reading Skills (introduced in 2023)

This part evaluates your ability to understand and interpret written
English:
identifying explicit information
inferring meaning from context
recognizing cohesion and coherence
reading scientific, literary, and journalistic texts
Because it focuses on comprehension rather than memorization,
students should practice regularly with authentic English reading
passages.
Recommended sources:
IELTS Reading • TOEFL Reading • Cambridge English texts • high-
quality news (BBC, Guardian) • scientific articles written for general
readers (National Geographic, Scientific American)

Should you study General Knowledge directly?

There is no single reliable book to prepare for IMAT General
Knowledge, and the content is too broad to memorize. Light reading
on history, culture, and current events is useful, but this section should
not consume a large portion of your study plan.

Where to invest your study time

For the highest score gain, prioritize the subjects that have clear rules,
predictable questions, and well-defined syllabi:
High-yield subjects:
Biology • Chemistry • Physics • Mathematics • Logical Reasoning
These areas consistently produce the most reliable points for
IMAT candidates.
Lower-yield but still relevant:
General Knowledge • Reading Skills

After securing strong fundamentals in the scientific subjects, you can

spend time improving reading fluency and staying informed on major
global events.

Final Advice

General Knowledge and Reading Skills matter, but they are supporting
sections, not core scoring pillars. Build strong English reading habits,
follow reputable global news sources, and keep your primary effort
focused on the subjects where you can consistently earn points.

Logical reasoning and problem solving
Study Guide
The Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving section contains 5 questions
in the IMAT exam. These questions assess your ability to analyze
arguments, identify assumptions, evaluate evidence, recognize patterns,
and solve problems using structured reasoning.

Recommended Resources
The most reliable reference for this section is:
Cambridge Thinking Skills (Critical Thinking & Problem Solving)
This book provides the clearest explanation of argument
structure, assumptions, flaws, inferences, and general
problem-solving strategies.
In addition to Cambridge Thinking Skills, students should practice
with:
IMAT past papers
High-quality IMAT-style reasoning questions
Logic sections from European medical entrance exams (where
appropriate)

How to Study This Section Effectively

Logical reasoning is not a memorization topic. Reading the theory
alone is not enough. True improvement comes from consistent,
deliberate practice.
Practice daily
Even 20–30 minutes per day builds the pattern-
recognition ability needed for this section.
Always read explanations
Understanding why an answer is correct matters more than
the answer itself.
Reasoning mistakes repeat unless the logic behind
them is understood.

Focus on accuracy before speed
Speed naturally improves once your reasoning structure
becomes automatic.

Final Advice

Logical Reasoning can become one of the highest-yield sections if

practice is done consistently. A strong foundation with Cambridge
Thinking Skills + daily practice of IMAT-style questions leads to the fastest
improvement.

Cell biology, genetics and anatomy
STUDY GUIDE
The Biology section contains 23 questions, making it the largest and most
heavily weighted section of the IMAT exam. Because of its wide range of
topics—from cell biology to genetics, biotechnology, evolution, and human
physiology—students must study from multiple reliable resources to build
a strong foundation.

Recommended Study Resources

Cell Biology & Genetics
For the molecular and cellular topics, the most effective and
accurate textbooks are:
Pearson Biology (International Edition)
Cambridge International Biology (A Level)
These books explain cell structure, biomolecules,
genetics, and molecular biology with the depth and
clarity IMAT requires.
Anatomy & Physiology
For human body systems, the best single resource is:
Kaplan MCAT – Physiology Sections

How to Study Biology Effectively

Use multiple sources
No single book covers all IMAT biology topics at the correct
level.
Use Pearson/Cambridge for cellular and molecular concepts
and Kaplan MCAT for anatomy and physiology.
Practice consistently
Biology is knowledge-dense, and questions can be tricky.
Memorising theory alone is not enough—you must apply the
information through practice

GENERAL AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
STUDY GUIDE
The Chemistry section of the IMAT contains 15 questions and covers a
wide range of fundamental topics including atomic structure, bonding,
stoichiometry, solutions, acids and bases, redox reactions, and
introductory organic chemistry. Because the section is both conceptual
and calculation-based, students must build a strong understanding of
theory and practice regularly.

Recommended Study Resources

Pearson Chemistry
Pearson’s international chemistry textbooks provide:
clear explanations
exam-level diagrams
strong foundations for bonding, periodicity, gases, solutions,
and stoichiometry
This is ideal for students who need a solid and structured
understanding of core chemistry topics.
Kaplan MCAT – General & Organic Chemistry
The Kaplan MCAT books offer:
concise, high-yield summaries
simplified explanations
excellent coverage of acid–base chemistry, buffers,
kinetics, thermodynamics, and organic functional groups
How to Study Chemistry Effectively
Understand, don’t memorize
Chemistry questions often test reasoning, not rote knowledge.
Students must be able to:
interpret chemical equations
predict outcomes
understand periodic trends
apply formulas correctly

pH calculations quickly become weak points.
Work through IMAT-style questions
Exam-style problems help you recognise patterns such as:
distractor traps
limiting reagents
conceptual vs. numerical items
multi-step logic questions
Use mixed sets
Chemistry questions often combine multiple concepts
(e.g., gases + stoichiometry, redox + balancing, acids +
buffers).
Mixed practice builds confidence and speed.

Final Recommendation for Students

Reading the theory alone is not enough.
Consistent practice is essential for mastering the IMAT Chemistry
section.

Reading Skills and Knowledge Acquired During Studies

The ability to understand written texts in English of different types

and with different communicative purposes is considered a cross-
disciplinary skill, since all questions will be written in English,
including the use of symbolic language.
The following abilities will also be specifically assessed:
understanding abstract, uncommon, or specialized vocabulary
in real contexts;
identifying textual cohesion and coherence mechanisms;
extracting and inferring specific pieces of information from the
text.
These abilities will be evaluated using short passages from
scientific essays, classical or contemporary literature, or short
current-affairs texts published in newspapers and general or
specialized magazines.
Starting from short texts of various types and themes, the exam
will also assess the knowledge and competencies acquired during
previous studies, as well as general-culture knowledge, including
supranational topics or issues relevant to contemporary public
debate. Specifically, the questions will aim to verify:
the ability to orient oneself within the represented space and
time, meaning the ability to locate relevant historical or cultural
phenomena in time and place;
knowledge of the main national and international institutions;
understanding of phenomena related to legal, economic, and
civic domains.

Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving

The questions aim to assess the ability to logically complete a line of

reasoning in a way that is consistent with the given premises. These
premises are presented in symbolic or verbal form and concern cases or
problems — including abstract ones — whose solution requires the use of
different types of logical reasoning.
