Research Intern – Machine Learning for Material
Science
Company: Shodh AI (Research Division)
Location: Jaipur, Rajasthan | Position Type: 6-Month, Full-time, On-site
ABOUT SHODH AI
At Shodh AI (derived from the Sanskrit word for ’Research’), we are a deep-tech startup backed
by the IndiaAI Mission, committed to building advanced AI systems for high-impact scientific
and engineering domains. Our work spans Material Science, Robotics, STEM Education, and
AI-driven Scientific Computing.
In our Research division, we are developing AI models that accelerate the discovery, charac-
terization, and design of next-generation materials. From predicting complex material properties
using microstructures to generating novel material candidates through advanced generative mod-
els, our mission is to push the boundaries of computational material science using cutting-edge
machine learning.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a highly driven Research Intern (Machine Learning – Materials Science)
to join our scientific computing team. This role is ideal for an individual eager to work at the
intersection of machine learning, deep learning, and computational materials research.
You will work directly with our research engineers and scientists to design, train, and optimize
ML/DL models for microstructure-based property prediction, material generation, and physics-
informed AI systems. This internship offers the rare opportunity to contribute to foundational
R&D in a fast-moving, impact-focused environment.
WHAT YOU WILL BUILD
Predictive Modeling & Representation Learning
Your core focus will be the development of ML/DL pipelines to predict mechanical, thermal,
and structural properties directly from microstructure images, simulation data, and material
descriptors. You will utilize architectures such as CNNs, Vision Transformers, and GNNs to
bridge the gap between raw data and material insights. Beyond prediction, you will architect
feature extractors and embedding models to learn high-dimensional latent representations of
microstructures, enabling critical downstream tasks like classification, clustering, and inverse
design.
Generative Design & Scientific Infrastructure
To accelerate material discovery, you will experiment with generative models—specifically VAEs,
GANs, and Diffusion Models—to synthesize hypothetical microstructures and explore the design
space for novel materials. Supporting this research, you will build reliable, reproducible pipelines
to preprocess microscopy data and execute large-scale experiments on GPUs. Crucially, you will
work on incorporating domain constraints and physics priors into these models to ensure that
our AI systems remain scientifically valid and robust.
1
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
You will own the full lifecycle of research features—from data preprocessing to model implemen-
tation, training, evaluation, and reporting. We expect our interns to write clean, modular, and
well-documented code using Git and to maintain high-quality research logs. You will collaborate
closely with a multidisciplinary team of ML engineers and materials scientists, presenting your
technical findings clearly.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Design & Experiment: Implement and rigorously test deep learning architectures (CNNs,
ViTs, GNNs), conducting ablations and hyperparameter optimization.
• Drive Technical Exploration: Propose new ideas and experimental directions across gen-
erative modeling and physics-informed ML.
• Ensure Reproducibility: Maintain strict research discipline regarding code quality, exper-
iment tracking, and documentation.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Academic & Technical Foundation
We are looking for candidates pursuing or recently having completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s de-
gree in Computer Science, Materials Science, Data Science, Metallurgical/Mechanical
Engineering, or a related field.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong command of Python and deep learning frameworks
(preferably PyTorch or TensorFlow), alongside scientific computing libraries like NumPy, SciPy,
and Pandas. A solid understanding of optimization methods, loss functions, and computer vision
concepts is required. Most importantly, we value a research-oriented mindset—you should be
comfortable reading academic papers and implementing new ideas from literature.
Highly Advantageous Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following skills will significantly strengthen your application:
• Experience with materials datasets, microstructure analysis, or FEM/simulation data.
• Familiarity with GNNs, Diffusion Models, or Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs).
• Prior work with microscopy images, dataset curation, or domain-specific preprocessing.
• Knowledge of CUDA, GPU optimization, or distributed training setups.
WHY JOIN SHODH AI?
Joining Shodh AI means contributing to real scientific advancements in materials discovery using
state-of-the-art ML techniques. You will not just assist but will build, experiment, and innovate
with high autonomy in a deep-tech startup culture where ideas move quickly from conception
to implementation.
Backed by the IndiaAI Mission, we offer mentorship from experienced researchers, opportu-
nities for co-authoring papers and patents, and the chance to be part of a national-level mission
contributing to India’s scientific and technological growth.
