■ Journal Notebook – John Wesley’s Life and

Ministry

Week 2: The Family of John Wesley

Summary:
John Wesley was born into a deeply religious family. His father, Samuel Wesley, was an Anglican
priest, while his mother, Susanna Wesley, was known for her strong faith and discipline. Susanna
greatly influenced John, teaching him discipline, prayer, and devotion. His siblings also shaped his
early spiritual growth, especially Charles Wesley, who would later become a key partner in ministry.

Reflection:
I am inspired by how John’s mother, Susanna, shaped his faith through discipline and spiritual
instruction. It shows how family plays an important role in nurturing a child’s relationship with God. I’m
also challenged to think about whether I give enough time to prayer and devotion in my own daily life.

Application:
From this lesson, I see the importance of building a strong spiritual foundation in the family. I can apply
this by valuing family devotions, praying with loved ones, and living a life that reflects faith even at
home.

Prayer/Verse:
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs
22:6
■ Lord, help me to strengthen my faith within my family and to be a source of encouragement to them,
just as Susanna was to John.

Week 3: Education of John Wesley

Summary:
John Wesley’s early education emphasized classical learning, including Latin, Greek, and philosophy.
His training sharpened his intellect, discipline, and logical thinking, which later helped him in preaching
and defending his faith. His academic grounding gave him tools to become a strong leader and
theologian.
Reflection:
I realize that education is not just about knowledge but also about discipline and character. Wesley’s
dedication to study challenges me to take my own learning seriously—not only in school but also in my
spiritual life.

Application:
I can apply this by being more disciplined in both my academic and spiritual studies, making time for
Scripture reading as carefully as I make time for my lessons.

Prayer/Verse:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” – Proverbs 9:10
■ Lord, give me wisdom and discipline, that I may use my knowledge for Your glory.

Week 4: Life at Oxford University and the Holy Club

Summary:
At Oxford, John Wesley became a fellow and, with his brother Charles, organized the “Holy Club.” The
group was dedicated to prayer, Bible study, fasting, and serving the poor. Though criticized as
“Methodists” for their strict discipline, the Holy Club laid the foundation for the Methodist movement.

Reflection:
I am inspired by their commitment to living out their faith seriously, even when others mocked them. It
challenges me to ask: Am I willing to stand firm in my faith, even if others laugh or misunderstand me?

Application:
I can live this out by practicing spiritual disciplines consistently—prayer, fasting, and acts of
service—while not being afraid of what others might say.

Prayer/Verse:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” – Romans 12:2
■ Lord, help me to be steadfast in faith and discipline, even when the world does not understand.

Week 5: Ministry as Priest

Summary:
John Wesley was ordained as a priest and began his ministry with great zeal. However, he faced
challenges such as rejection, ridicule, and doubts about his effectiveness. Despite difficulties, his
persistence and faith helped him grow into a more humble and effective servant of God.

Reflection:
I see that ministry is not easy and often comes with challenges. What inspires me is Wesley’s
perseverance—he didn’t give up even when facing discouragement. This challenges me to remain
faithful in my service to God, even when I encounter failures or obstacles.

Application:
This lesson encourages me to trust God in the face of challenges and to serve Him with humility. In my
own life, I can apply this by not giving up when things get hard, whether in ministry, school, or personal
struggles.

Prayer/Verse:
“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” – Galatians
6:9
■ Lord, strengthen me to endure challenges with faith and courage, just as John Wesley did in his
ministry.
