VERY SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS {2 x 5= 10}
11 State Snell's law of refraction of light. Express it mathematically. 2
12 To construct a ray diagram we use two rays which are so chosen that it is easy to know their 2
directions after reflection from the mirror. List two such rays and state the path of these rays
after reflection in case of concave mirrors. Use these two rays and draw ray diagram to locate
the image of an object placed between pole and focus of a concave mirror.
13 A concave mirror produces three times magnified image on a screen. If the object is placed 20 2
cm in front of the mirror, how far is the screen from the object?
14 Draw labelled ray diagrams for each of the following cases to show the position, nature and 2
size of the image formed by a convex lens when the object is placed.
(i) between its optical center (O) and principal focus (F)
(ii) between F and 2 F
15 State the laws that are followed when light is reflected by spherical mirrors. Draw a ray 2

LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS {2 x 5 = 10}
18 Light propagates with different speeds in different media. Light travels the fastest in vacuum 5
with the highest speed of 3 x 108 ms¹. A ray of light that travelsobliquely from one transparent
medium into another will change its direction in the
second medium as shown below in the given diagrams
where three equal sized rectangular blocks (i), (ii) and
(iii) are taken. These blocks are made of different
materials when are placed in air. The angle of incidence
is different in each case but the angle of refraction is the
same in all three blocks.
(A) Compare the speed of light in these three blocks (i),
(ii) and (iii) as well as the refractive indices of the three
blocks (1), (ii) and (iii).
(B) Define absolute refractive index. Find the refractive index for a medium in which speed of
light is 2.25 x 108 m/s. While speed of light in vacuum is given as 3 x 108 m/s.
(C) A tank of water appears less deep i.e., only 3 m when viewed from top. If refractive index
of water is 4/3, what isthe actual depth of the tank?
19 (A) Out of convex mirror and concave mirror, which one can show a full length image of a tall 5
object in all its position? Write any one use of such mirrors.
(B) When can entire image of the object be seen in a plane mirror? Write the characteristics of
an image formed by a plane mirror?
(C) Justify the given statements:
(i) Concave lens of very short focal length causes higher divergence than the one with larger
focal length.
(ii) When object moves closer to convex lens, the image formed by it shifts away from the lens.
(D) You are is looking at yourself in a convex mirror at a science museum, standing 2 m away

The above image is that of a reflecting telescope. Reflecting telescopes revolutionised our ways
of looking into the sky. They employ mirrors to gather and focus light, rather than relying
solely on lenses as in their refracting counterparts. These telescopes utilise precisely shaped and
polished mirrors to capture incoming light and reflect it to a focal point, where it forms an
image for observation.
[Link] kind of image of the star is seen by the observer at the eyepiece?
B. What kind of mirror is used in this reflecting telescope?
C. Explain with reason what kind of optical device (type of lens or mirror) that is used at the
eyepiece.
D. What is the role of the plane mirror in the telescope?
