Collective Leadership

The concept of collective leadership revolves around the collaborative efforts of

individuals to achieve a common goal. Within these collaborative cycles, participants

collectively envision their desired future, analyze their experiences and interactions, and

shape their decisions and actions to produce the desired outcomes (Edwards & Bolden,

2022). The complex and challenging nature of the environment necessitates an innovative

approach, which cannot be accomplished by a single individual. Therefore, future trends

require leaders to collaborate, share information, and engage in collective brainstorming

before making decisions. Individual leaders who are highly engaging and visible have the

power to influence an organization's brand and culture, either positively or negatively

(Bolger, n.d.).

The pace at which innovation is being revamped is incredibly rapid. As a result, the

design of work within the organization will continue to evolve, as will the employees'

attitudes towards work. Therefore, it is crucial for a leader to select a leadership style that will

prove to be suitable in the future. Despite the advantages of team-based or distributed

leadership development, the leader should also be aware of traditional management styles

that may play a significant role in various situations. This not only ensures the success of the

team but also enhances the leader's effectiveness.

Benefits of Collective Leadership

1. Enhanced decision-making and increased efficiency - Through collective leadership,

ideas are generated and developed with the input of multiple minds within a team. This

leads to a more informed decision-making process and allows for feedback, ultimately

improving the overall effectiveness of the team's operations.

2. Responsibility Distributed - In the case of shared liability, supervisors experience a sense

of being surrounded by innovative individuals. By distributing the obligation among

others, they find solace in knowing that responsibility is shared. This shared obligation

not only ensures accountability but also provides an opportunity for enhanced leadership.

Weaknesses of Collective Leadership

1. In the expansive professional environment, it proves challenging to isolate leaders and

have them work independently on their issues. As a result, there is an expectation for

individuals to maintain connections and collaborate with one another.

2. Synergistic leaders have the responsibility of establishing clear and precise job

descriptions and duties for every team member to adhere to (Edwards & Bolden, 2022).

Collective Leadership Model

The department of operations management is ideally suited for the implementation of

a collective leadership model. In the field of engineering, the focus lies on the creation and

testing of innovative products that have yet to enter the market. As a chemical engineer, my

industry heavily relies on the experimentation and exploration of various chemical

compounds. The primary responsibility of a chemical engineer is to design and develop

efficient manufacturing processes for these chemicals. By adopting a collective leadership

model, we can enhance the efficiency of these processes. In research, every team member

plays a crucial role, and shared responsibility is a key advantage of collective leadership. In

my industry, the collaboration among team members proves to be highly beneficial.

Additionally, the redundancy of tasks such as testing contributes to the accuracy of results.

Therefore, I strongly believe that implementing distributed leadership in my industry would

be a wise decision.

Conclusion

The attributes of Collective Leadership make it the ideal form of leadership for

individuals who aspire to improve and assume leadership roles. This style not only fosters

innovative solutions but also boosts employee morale, resulting in a more positive work

environment within organizations.
