BIOLOGY PROJECT 1:
Addressing Deforestation and Its Impact on Local Communities
Stage 1: Problem Identification
Deforestation, the large-scale removal of trees and forests, is a significant environmental issue affecting
biodiversity, climate, and livelihoods. This problem is particularly severe in regions where forests are
cleared for agriculture, urban expansion, or illegal logging. The local community suffers from reduced air
quality, loss of wildlife, and climate changes leading to droughts or floods. This problem is mainly
affecting people in Sakubva areas and also students at First Class Academy
Statement of Intent
This project aims to combat deforestation by promoting reforestation, sustainable land-use practices,
and community-led conservation initiatives.
Design Specifications
The project will include:
1. Organizing tree-planting events.
2. Educating the community about the importance of forests.
3. Implementing sustainable farming techniques.
4. Advocating for strict environmental policies.
Stage 2: Investigation of Related Ideas
How has the problem been solved before?
1. Reforestation Projects – Countries like Brazil and India have planted millions of trees to restore
degraded lands.
Advantage -
--More trees are grown and the trees that are cut down are replaced.
Disadvantage
-Some individuals may not cooperate in planting of the trees.
2. Strict Legal Regulations– Costa Rica implemented strong laws banning excessive logging, leading to
significant reforestation efforts.
Advantage
-People are afraid of getting arrested and deforestation is reduced in communities.
Disadvantage -
Some people may just break the rules and cut down trees in areas which are not under supervision.
3. Alternative Energy Solutions – Several nations have introduced clean energy sources like solar energy
to reduce dependency on firewood.
Advantage
-Deforestation and air pollution are both reduced as people will be using environmentally friendly
energy sources.
Disadvantage
-It may be expensive for other people to buy equipment such as solar equipment.
Stage 3: Generation of Ideas
Possible solutions for addressing deforestation:
1.Community-Led Tree Planting Initiatives – Encouraging residents to participate in large-scale tree-
planting drives.
Advantages
-Everyone in local communities can be able to participate by planting one tree each perso
Disadvantages
-Not everyone will be willing to plant these trees as some may not engage in such activitie
2. Eco-Friendly Agriculture – Promoting sustainable farming techniques that reduce land clearing.
Advantage
-Land clearing is reduced as people are taught some skills that reduce land clearing when farming
Disadvantage
-Some community members may not attend such meetings and they do not get the information
3. Educational Campaigns – Raising awareness through school programs and media outreach.
Advantage
-Everyone in schools and local areas can get the information and avoid deforestation
Disadvantage
-Some people may take these campaigns for granted and never support these activities.
Stage 4: Development of Selected Ideas
Chosen Solution: Community-Led Tree Planting
The solution was selected due to its ability to directly involve local residents and create immediate
positive change. This helps everyone to engage in the activities and more trees are planted as individuals
are told to plant one tree for each person
Process:
1. Organize tree-planting events in deforested areas.
2. Educate farmers on sustainable agriculture methods.
3. Collaborate with local authorities for protection policies.
4. Monitor the growth of planted trees and assess environmental impact.
Refinement of chosen idea
-For this project to be successful, people must be taught on how to plant trees and the good conditions
of having trees in local areas and also the effects of not having trees in communities
-A special day must be selected in schools and all over the country for tree planting and everyone should
participate in such events
-People who do not plant trees must be sued for not cooperating and the information must be passed in
televisions and radios so that everyone can get access to the valid information
Stage 5: Presentation of results

The chart above shows the total number of people who participated in the reforestation program. The
number of people who really participated are the local people followed by the elders and the rest are
youths and school learners and this investigation really helped out in the replanting of trees at the local
area.
The picture shows how trees were planted
and how many they were.
Stage 6: Evaluation and Recommendations
EVALUATION: REVELANCE TO STATEMENT OF INTEND
My original aim was to find a solution to the problem of deforestation in Sakubva area and to promote
reforestation programs so that the trees are increased. The project was successful as the people
cooperated and the work done was good as the number of planted trees is increasing in the community
CHALLENGES
Challenges included lack of participation and financial support. These were addressed by securing
funding from local businesses and government initiatives.
Recommendations
Future projects should focus on expanding outreach programs and integrating forest conservation into
school curriculums. Collaborating with environmental organizations can provide additional resources
and expertise.
