WEEK 1

Topic 1: Should couples be required to take parenting classes before they

decide to have a baby? Argue for or against this idea.
DRAFTING:
Some people think that couples should attend parenting classes before they have a baby.
Personally, I partly agree with this idea, but I do not think it should be compulsory.
On the one hand, there are several advantages if couples take parenting classes. Firstly,
many young people today do not live in big families, so they lack experience in raising
children. Attending a class can give them important knowledge, for example how to feed
a baby or how to take care of a child’s health. Secondly, these classes can help parents
reduce stress. For instance, mothers often feel nervous about breastfeeding or children’s
illnesses, and professional advice can make them calmer and more confident.
On the other hand, I do not believe that the government should require all couples to do
this. Parenting has been a natural part of human life for centuries, and many parents can
learn by themselves or from relatives. For example, grandparents often share their
experience with younger generations, which is very helpful. Moreover, every family
situation is different. A general class cannot cover all problems that parents may face in
real life. If it is made compulsory, it may even create extra pressure and limit the couple’s
freedom of choice.
In conclusion, parenting classes are useful and can prepare couples for future challenges,
but they should remain optional rather than a legal requirement.
