MATH ACTIVITY 1
MAXIMA &MINIMA

OBJECTIVE: To construct an open box of maximum volume from a given square sheet by cutting equal
squares from each corner
MATERIAL REQUIRED: graph paper, scissors, cello tape.

METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION:

1. Take a square graph paper of size 18 cm .

2. Cut four equal squares each of side x cm from each corner .
3. Make an open box by folding its flaps using cello tape. Calculate its volume and record in the
table below.
4. Repeat the process by taking different values of x.

OBSERVATION:

Value of 𝑥 (cm) Length (cm) Breadth (cm) Height (cm) Volume of box ([Link])
𝑥=2 𝑉1 =
𝑥=3 𝑉2 =
𝑥=4 𝑉3 =

CONCLUSION:
Volume of the open box is maximum when x = _______ 𝑐𝑚

Verification by maxima and minima principle:

Let length of the side of square removed from each corner be 𝑥 𝑐𝑚.
𝑉 = (18 − 2𝑥)2 𝑥

Hence verified

APPLICATION:
This activity is useful in explaining the concepts of maxima/minima of functions. It is also useful in making packages of
maximum volume with minimum cost.
