Design Problem Title:
"Elevating Resilience: A Climate-Adaptive Waterfront Promenade for CDO"
Context and Background:
Cagayan de Oro is a city intersected by a major river system and frequently experiences flooding during the rainy season. Many riverside
communities are vulnerable to displacement and lack safe public spaces. Yet, these areas also hold strong cultural, ecological, and recreational
potential if thoughtfully designed.
The city needs resilient and inclusive waterfront developments that integrate flood management with community engagement, recreation, and
ecological awareness.
Design Challenge:
Design a modular riverside promenade along a selected segment of the Cagayan de Oro River (e.g., near Carmen, Puntod, or Kauswagan) that
supports climate resilience, enhances public access, and strengthens the local community's relationship with the river.
This project is not a full-scale urban masterplan but rather a small-scale, adaptable intervention that can serve as a model prototype.
Design Goals:
• Reconnect the community with the river through safe, inclusive public space.
• Respond to seasonal river level changes (adaptive platforms, stilted designs, etc.).
• Encourage eco-friendly and low-impact materials.
• Create zones for activity, such as:
o shaded viewing decks
o flood-resilient playground or fitness areas
o floating platforms or boardwalks
o community art walls or educational murals
o kiosks for small vendors
• Integrate disaster risk reduction (e.g., evacuation signage, elevated pathways).
• Provide design solutions for both dry and wet season usability.
Deliverables:
• Site selection and visual analysis
• Design narrative / concept statement (max 300 words)
• Design inspiration board (optional but encouraged)
• Layout plan (site plan of intervention only)
• Perspective sketches or renders
• Key sections showing elevation/flood adaptation
• Exploded axonometric or material breakdown
• Sustainability strategies (e.g., water permeability, native planting)
• Optional: Community impact infographic or storyboard
Timeline: 2 Weeks
• Day 1–2: Research on flooding and riverside community needs
• Day 3–4: Site visit (or virtual site study), concept generation
• Day 5–6: Form development, module planning
• Day 7–9: Design drawings (plan, section, perspective)
• Day 10–12: Final detailing, sustainability features
• Day 13–14: Final board compilation and presentation prep
Realistic Sites to Explore:
• Riverside walkway behind City Hall and Gaston Park
• Near Puntod-Kauswagan Bridge where informal housing is prevalent
• Carmen riverside behind barangay hall or health centers
