**Course:** Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

**Academic Year:** 2023–2024

1. Introduction

A punching machine is a device commonly used to create holes in various materials such as
metal sheets. This project represents a miniaturized, manual model of a punching machine,
which is operated similarly to a handpump. It serves educational purposes by providing
hands-on understanding of mechanical motion and production techniques. This project
bridges the gap between theoretical mechanical concepts and real-world applications.

2. Objectives

- To understand the working of a punching mechanism.

- To demonstrate the mechanical force transfer using lever and spring.

- To construct a working miniature model using actual fabrication methods.

- To apply theoretical knowledge through a practical project.

- To develop basic engineering skills such as welding, fitting, and teamwork.

3. Materials Used

- Mild Steel (MS) Sheets and Rods

- Welding Electrodes

- Compression Springs

- Nuts, Bolts, Washers

- Lever Handle (Metal Pipe)

- Paint and Finishing Material

- Base Frame for Stability

4. Tools and Techniques

- Arc Welding

- Angle Grinder (Cutting)

- Drilling Machine

- Manual Measuring Tools (Scale, Caliper)

- Assembly Tools (Spanners, Wrenches)

- Surface Finishing using Spray Paint

5. Design and Working Principle

The punching machine is made up of a fixed frame, a lever, and a spring-loaded punching
rod. When the user pulls down the lever manually, the force is transferred to the punching
rod. The spring mechanism ensures the rod resets to its original position after release. This
setup mimics the functioning of real industrial punching machines, converting manual force
into vertical motion.
6. Step-by-Step Fabrication Process

1. Designing and cutting the base and vertical support structures.

2. Welding the frame and ensuring rigidity.

3. Aligning guide holes and installing the punch and spring mechanism.

4. Attaching the lever and ensuring smooth pivot motion.

5. Finishing the model with paint and testing for consistent performance.

7. Features of the Model

- Operated manually with realistic components.

- Spring-assisted return motion.

- Compact, portable, and easy to demonstrate.

- Constructed entirely from durable metal.

- Economical and educational.

8. Challenges Faced

- Precision welding and accurate alignment.

- Managing equal spring tension.

- Ensuring lever moves freely without friction.

- Designing without the help of CAD software.

- Balancing the model to prevent toppling during use.

9. Applications and Relevance

- Demonstrates principles of force transfer and mechanical motion.

- Useful as a teaching tool in engineering workshops.

- Applies basic concepts relevant to the sheet metal industry.

- Provides understanding of safe manual punching operations.

- Can be a base model for studying further automation.

10. Conclusion

Through this project, I have learned the fundamental principles behind mechanical
punching. I gained hands-on experience in fabrication, understood the importance of
precision, and improved my teamwork and problem-solving abilities. The manual punching
machine model successfully illustrates real-world engineering processes and serves as a
functional demonstration of mechanical concepts.
