 Describe/discuss the early education of Rizal in Calamba and Biñan.

ACTIVITY 1
FACT OR BLUFF!
1. Rizal have 10 siblings, 9 sisters and 1 brother.
2. Rizal learned to read and write at the age of three.
3. Rizal's father was a Spanish friar.
4. Rizal wrote his first poem at the age of 8.
5. Rizal experienced bullying from older boys in Biñan.

Explanation: His siblings included Saturnina, Paciano, Narcisa, Olimpia, Lucia, Maria,
Concepcion, Josefa, Trinidad, and Soledad.

Explanation: Rizal began learning to read and write around age five, taught by his
mother, Doña Teodora, who was his first teacher.

RIZAL'S EARLY EDUCATION

 Rizal had his early education in Calamba and Biñan.


 Teaching was characterized by four R’s:
• Reading
• Writing
• Arithmetic
• Religion
 Instruction was rigid and strict.
 Knowledge was forced into the minds of pupil.
By means of tedious memory method aided by teachers whips (latigo).
 Despite the defects of the Spanish system of elementary education, Rizal was
able to acquire the necessary instruction preparatory for college work in Manila
and abroad.
 Rizal, who was born a physical weakling, rose to become an intellectual giant not
because of, but rather in spite of, the outmoded and backward system of
instruction obtaining in the Philippines during the last decades of Spanish regime.
HERO'S FIRST TEACHER
DOÑA TEODORA ALONZO REALONDA
 first non-formal teacher. Who was a remarkable woman of good character and
fine lecture.
 At 3 years old he(Jose) learned the alphabet and prayers
 At the age of 8 he wrote a tagalog poem entitled
“Sa aking mga kababata”.
3 NON-FORMAL TEACHER OF RIZAL

MAESTRO LEON MONROY
 a classmate of Don Francisco Mercado Rizal
 became Rizal's tutor in Spanish and Latin

JOSE GOES TO BIÑAN

 Rizal goes to Biñan with his brother Paciano
 Two brothers rode carromata, reaching their destination after one and one-half
hours’ drive.
 Rizal lodged to his Aunt's house together with his cousin Leandro
FIRST DAY IN BIÑAN SCHOOL

 Rizal first formal teacher
 The school was in the house of the teacher,
a small hipa hut.
 Jose described his teacher as;
"He was tall, thin, long-necked, with a sharp nose and a body slightly bent forward,
and he used to wear a sinamay shirt, woven by the skilled hands of the women of
Batangas. He knew by heart the grammars by Nebrija and Gainza. Add to this his
severity, that in my judgment was exaggerated, and you have a picture, perhaps vague,
that I have made of him, but I remember only this,"
FIRST SCHOOL BRAWL

 the teacher’s son.
Jose was angry for being bullied.
So, he challenged it to a fight, they wrestled furiously.
TIO MANUEL
 Jose learned the art of wrestling from his athletic Tio.
ANDRES SALANDANAN
 Classmate, challenged Jose to an arm-wrestling match.
PAINTING LESSONS IN BIÑAN
OLD JUANCHO
- Jose lured by his love for painting
 a painter, gave free lessons in painting and sculpture
 Jose and Jose Guevarra become apprentices of the old painter. Became “the
favorite painters of the class”
DAILY LIFE IN BIÑAN
Jose’s Daily Routine:
 Hear mass at 4 a.m. or studies lesson before going to mass.
 Goes to orchard to look for mabolo to eat.
 Breakfast
 Goes to class at 10 a.m.
 Lunch break
 Goes back school at 2 p.m.
 Goes home at 5 p.m.
 Pray with cousins
 Studies lessons, then draw a little
 Has supper
 Prays again
 Plays in the street if the moon is bright
 Sleeps
BEST STUDENT IN SCHOOL
• In academic studies, Jose beat all Biñan boys.
• He surpassed them all in Spaniah, Latin and other subjects.
• Some his classmates were jealous of his intellectual superiority.
• Even told lies to discredit him before the teacher’s eyes.
• Teacher had to punish Jose.
• Thus, Rizal said “in spite of the reputation I had of being a good boy, the day was
unusual when I was not laid out on a bench and given five or six blows”.
END OF BIÑAN SCHOOLING
DECEMBER 17, 1870
- Rizal left Biñan, after one year and half of schooling

- The streamer were Jose rode
ARTURO CAMPS
-a French friend of Rizal's father who took care of Jose during the trip
MARTYRDOM OF GOMBURZA
• January 20, 1872 - Cavite mutiny
• February 17, 1872 - Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora
were implicated and executed
• The GOM-BUR-ZA were leaders of the secularization movement.
• The martyrdom of the three priests inspired Rizal to fight the evils of Spanish
tyranny and redeem his oppressed people.
• In 1891, Rizal dedicated his second novel El Filibusterismo to GOM-BUR-ZA
INJUSTICE TO HERO'S MOTHER
In 1872,
DOÑA TEODORA - was arrested on a malicious charge that she aided his brother JOSE
ALBERTO in trying to poison his wife.
JOSE ALBERTO'S WIFE - had a relationship with the lieutenant of the GUARDIA CIVIL.
ANTONIO VIVENCIO DEL ROSARIO - gobernadorcillo of Calamba, helped the
lieutenant arrest Doña Teodora
50 KILOMETERS - Doña Teodora was made to walk from Calamba to the provincial
prison in Santa Cruz
DON FRANCISCO DE MARCAIDA & DON MANUEL MAZANO - most famous lawyers
of Manila, defended Doña Teodora in court
AFTER 2 1/2 YEARS - the Royal Audiencia acquitted Doña Teodora

Generalization
A strong foundation in education, even during childhood, can greatly influence a
person’s future. Rizal’s early learning experiences taught him to be disciplined,
independent, and intelligent.
Application
Activity: Poster Making
Create a simple poster showing how Rizal valued education at a young age. Add a
quote or message encouraging others to value learning.
