Turbine Nozzle Shield Inspection Alert

This document outlines an alert regarding the visual inspection of certain first-stage nozzle shield dome details for specific engine/turbine models that may have been manufactured with incorrect materials. It details the compliance requirements, inspection procedures, and potential risks associated with using 310 stainless steel instead of Hastelloy X, which could lead to turbine failures. The document also provides instructions for replacing any affected parts and recording compliance.

ALERT

ENGINE, TURBINE, VISUAL INSPECTION OF CERTAIN FIRST-STAGE

NOZZLE SHIELD DOME DETAILS FOR CONIDITION
1. PLANNING INFORMATION:

A. Effectivity:

Any 250-C18, --~C20. -B15G or-617 Series engine/turbine wtlictl does not have an internal
energy absorbing ring installed which were:

(1) New engini?s built between January 30, 1990 and February ~1, 1993 in which the energy
absorbing ring may have been removed.

(2) Overhauled or repaired since Jarwary 30. 1990 where the first-stage nozzle shield dome
was replaced.
(3) Any engine/turbine for which the above cannot be determined.

B. Reason:

Approximately 48 P/N 23031415 noz& shield dome details were mlst,skenly manufactured
from 310 stainless steel in lieu of Hastelloy X. These suspect details which were
manufactured b~?tween January 30. 1390 and February 1, lYY3 could have been delivered I”
new engines, new turbine assemblies, spare nozzle shield asserr~blies, or as repair part
details. The 310 stainless steel dome detail can oxidze and erode faster than may otherwse
be expected. This erosion can cause a hole in the nozzle shield, resulting I” an increase in
turbine cooling iilir temperature. This condition could ultimately lead to a first-stage turbine
wheel failure or partial or complete power loss.

C. Descriotion:

Access to the first-stage turbine nozzle shield is gained through the fuel nozzle boss by
removing the iu?l nozzle. The dome detail is then inspected with a bwescope for early signs
of accelerated deterioration.

D. Aooroval:

Technical aspects are FAA approved.

E. Compliance:

Code 2. To be c:ornplied with within speclfled flight hours and/or c:alendar time.

(1) Enginesiturblnes with less than 1000 hours TSN,TSO:

. Accorxllsh at 1000 hours.
(2) Engines/turbines with more than 1000 hours TSN/TSO but less tk#an 1200 hours:
. Accomslish within next 100 hours followlng receipt of this bill&in.

(3) Engines/turbines with more than 1200 hours TSNKSO:

. Accomplish within the next 25 hours followirxj receipt of this t~ulletin.

2. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
A. Gain borescope access to the first-stage nozzle shield dome area through the fuel nozzle
boss in the outer combustion case.
B. Inspect the nozzle shield dome detail in the area indicated in Figure 1 for evidence of holes,
cracks, erosion or other severe deterioration. See photographs in Figure 2 for examples.
C. Nozzle shields exhibiting evidence of deterioration must be removed from sewice.
D. Remove and replace the damaged nozzle shields per the Operation and Maintenance Manual
E. Rejected nozzle shields may be returned to Allison for credit provided the dome material is
identified as 310 stainless steel.
