28. 2 mL of sodium hydroxide solution is added to a few pieces of granulated zinc metal
taken in a test tube. When the contents are warmed, a gas evolves which is bubbled
through a soap solution before testing. Write the equation of the chemical reaction
involved and the test to detect the gas. Name the gas which will be evolved when the
same metal reacts with dilulte solution of strong acid.

electrons passing through a cross-section of the filament in 30 minutes.

34. a) When two resistors of resistances R1andR2 are connected in parallel, the net
resistance is 3Ω. When connected in series, its value is 16Ω. Calculate the values of R1 and
R2.
b) Calculate the ratio of current drawn in both the cases from the power supply of 24 V.

34 a) On entering in a medium from air, the speed of light becomes half of its value in air.
Find the refractive index of that medium with respect to air.
b)A glass slab made of a material of refractive index n1 is kept in a medium of refractive
index n2. A light ray is incident on the slab. Draw the path of the rays of light emerging from
the glass slab, if (i) n1>n2 (ii) n1=n2 (iii) n1<n2.

do impulses flow only in one direction in a reflex arc?

36. A remarkable property of acids is that they can dissolve' metals. When metals are added
to an acid, they disintegrate and disappear into the acid.
(a) State one other common observation when metals 'dissolve' in acids. Explain the reason or
this observation.
(b) If the acid with the 'dissolved' metal is evaporated, can we get the metal back? Why or
why not?
(c) In this question, the word 'dissolve' is used within quotes. This is because it is not
actually an example of dissolving. What is the main difference between a metal 'dissolving'
in an acid and sugar dissolving in water?
