Reality Check
Jasmin M. Ignacio

1
Once upon a time, in a small town of Santa Maria, there was a daughter who
likes to complain to her mother that her life is simple and boring. 2 She keeps on
comparing her life to the life of other people that she sees on her social media
account. 3She is unhappy and discontented about her life and the way of living
that her parents can afford, and as days go by, there is a burning desire inside
her heart that she wants to live like her idols on the internet.
4
One day, she asked her mother why they can’t afford the life that she
wanted, and her mother did not answer and continued to knit the colorful scarf
that she’s making.
5
Then, her mother went to the kitchen and get a candle and a red apple. 6She
first got the apple and put it above the table. 7The mother asked her daughter to
describe the apple based on what she sees.
8
The daughter replied and said, “It looks delicious,
and it is pleasing to my eyes.”
9
Then the mother got a knife and cut the
apple into half and asked, “Now what can you
see?”
10
The daughter was shocked by what she
saw inside the red beautiful apple. She saw
rotten flesh inside it.
11
At that moment, the mother explained, “Looks can be deceiving, you cannot
tell what’s going on inside in just looking at the outside appearance, like the
social media influencers on the internet, they only upload the things and events in
their lives that are accepted and pleasing to the eyes of their followers but in
reality, it is the other way around.”
12
Then, she turned off the lights and asked her daughter to light up the candle
on the table.
13
Turning to her, she asked her daughter, “What can you get in lighting this
candle? “It lit up the room,” she quickly replied.
14
Then the mother asked her again, “What happened to the candle? And her
daughter observed and said, “It became shorter as time passes.”

15
“That’s right, when you light a candle, its flame w
ill give out light, as long as it is fed by the burning wax.
16
This burning is called sacrifice. 17There can be no light
without sacrifice. 18Humans are like this candle they consumed

light. Like the successful personalities that you idolized on
your social media account, they consumed time and effort to
be fruitful, and so were you. 20You need to light up the candle,
start to sacrifice, and to do something to keep the fire
burning,” she added.

21
The daughter realized that her mother was right, that not everything on

social media or the internet, in general, is true. She needs to be wise in what
23
she’s going to believe. At that time, she also learned that when she wanted
something, she needs to work hard to attain it. 24The daughter hu gged her mother
and asked for forgiveness.

25
From that day forward, the daughter did not compla in, and she stops comparing
her life to others, especially to what she sees on the internet.

Analyzing Literature as a Means of Understanding

Unchanging Values in the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain,
Complex, Ambiguous) World

Literary Analysis is a closely studying a text, interpreting its meanings, and exploring why the
author made certain choices. It can be applied to novels, short stories, plays, poems, or any

Purpose of Literary Analysis

1. To gain insight into the development of literary works.
2. To analyze how the authors use literary methods to establish meaning.
3. To realize the perspectives that the authors take to establish a theme.
4. To appreciate the complex nature of literature.

form of literary writing.

Now that you already have the idea about Literary Analysis and its purpose. Let's study
these 5 simple tips that you can use in writing a literary analysis.

8
FiveSimple Tips in Writing Literary Analysis
1. Choose a Topic
You need to choose a topicexcites
that you. Topics can be divided into the main
literary ele
ments:

• Characters
• Themes
• Conflict
• Setting
• Plot
2. Focus the Topic
You need to do a lot of brainstorming, outlining, and specific thinking about the
element on which you would focus.
like to

• The brainstorming process involves mapping out the pects

different
of as
the chosen element.

• Make a choice by narrowing down the selection and focusing the ideas.

• Come up with a question to answer: What do you want to explore about

the topic? Whyes
doit stand out to you?

• Answer the "why" question. Instead of simply describe the text, "why" pushes you
to analyze and even synthesize.
3. Gather Textual Evidence
Collecting material to answer or support your question is often a time-consuming
stage, because most of the close reading will occur here. You can use the ICHL in
gathering textual evidence.

• Identify common themes, repetitions, and patterns.

• Categorize elements, tone, and narrative style.

• Highlight characterization, setting, and foreshadowing.

• Label character types, symbols, and metaphor

4. Introduce, Evidence, Analyze Introduce

You should introduce your point in one or two clear topic sentences. Next, it's

9
important to provide evidence that supports the main.

Evidence

• Quotation: When providing evidence word for word from a primary or secondary
source, you should be reminded to use quotation marks only if the words have not been
altered.
• Summary: You need to summarize a piece of evidence by restating it in a shorter form
using your own words.
• Paraphrase: You need to explain a piece of evidence using your own
words.

Analyze

It's important that you know how to distinguish between descriptive writing and

analytical writing.
Descriptive writing answers the "who," "what," "where," and "how" questions. It often
tends to summarize the text.

Analytical writing, however, answers the "why" question.

5. Conclusion

You can focus on concluding with what you hope to get out of your analysis or

provide closure to the topic. Most importantly, you should seize the conclusion
as an opportunity to provide your own opinion and reflection about your process
of analyzing the text.

Here is an example of a literary analysis essay.

10
Reality Check

Contentment and appreciation are the main things that the author clearly wants to

convey to her readers. The use of metaphor in comparing a beautiful apple and a candle

to the life of a person specially, to the personalities we idolized on social media, is very

effective. The author successfully has shown parallelism of the objects she used in giving

the value of simple things in life. The author also emphasizes the character’s attitude a t

the beginning of the story that is shown in sentences numbers 1, 2, and 3 it is a good

technique to highlight the problem in the story. The story also highlighted the positive

attitude of the mother that she exhibits patience, wisdom, and love for her da ughter.

In addition, the story also stressed out the good and bad things of idolizing

personalities on social media. We need to be wise in everything we believed on the

internet in general. Life offers us many good things, and we need to be intelligent in

every decision we are making.

As a reader, it undoubtedly was shown at the end of the story the author wants to

convey the realization of the daughter of her mistakes and, as she quickly hugged her

mother and asked for forgiveness this indicates that the author wants the readers to

realize

the importance of asking forgiveness and to be forgiven on the same time.

Great! Now that you are knowledgeable about the 5 simple tips in writing a literary
analysis, you are now prepared for your next set of tasks. You can do it! Good luck!
