1. Obtain the two regression lines from the following data and estimate the blood
pressure when the age is 50 years. Can we also estimate the blood pressure of a
person aged 20 years on the basis of regression equation. Discuss.

2. For 50 students of a class the regression equation of the marks in Statistics (X) on
the marks in Accounting (Y) is 3Y-5X+180=0. The mean marks in Accountancy is 44
and variance of marks in Statistics is 9/16 th of the variance of marks in Accountancy.
Find the mean marks in Statistics and the coefficient of correlation between marks
in two subjects.

3. Fit the regression line Y=a+bX by the method of least squares.

4. Given the following data, obtain the yield when rainfall is 29 inches:
Rainfall (inches) Yield (per acre)
Mean 27 40

5. The following calculations have been made for prices of 12 stocks (X) on the
Calcutta Stock Exchange on a certain day along with the volume of sales in thousand
of shares (Y). From these calculations find the regression equation of prices on
stocks, on the volume of sales of shares.
∑X = 580, ∑Y=370, ∑XY=11494, ∑X2 = 41658, ∑Y2=17206

6. The following data give the experience of machine operators and their performance
ratings as given by the number of good parts turned out per 100 pieces:
Operator 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Experience
16 12 18 4 3 10 5 12
(X)
Performance
87 88 89 68 78 80 75 83
Ratings (Y)
Calculate the regression lines of performance ratings on experience and estimate
the probable performance if an operator has 7 years of experience.

7. From the 10 observations of price (m) and supply (n) of a commodity, the following
summary figures were obtained ( in appropriate units):
∑m = 130, ∑n=220, ∑mn=3467, ∑m2 = 2288, ∑n2=5506
Compute the line of regression of n on m and estimate the supply when price is 16.

8. Given bxy=0.85 , byx=0.89 and the standard deviation of X=6, find the value of r and
σy. [page 479]
9. The correlation coefficient between two variables X and Y is r=0.6. If S x=1.50, Sy=2,
X̄ =10 and Ȳ=20, find the regression line of:
(i)Y on X and (ii) X on Y
