MASTER DATA

Master data is the core data that is used as a base for any transaction. If you are producing,
transferring stock, selling, purchasing, doing physical inventory, whatever your activity may be, it
requires certain master data to be maintained.

And master data cannot be moved from one server to another because it will not generate TR like
configuration data so we have to create master data separately in each server.

Types of Master Data in SAP

1. MATERIAL MASTER

2. VENDOR MASTER

3. PURCHASE INFO RECORD (PIR)

4. SOURCE LIST

In this Particular Document we will learn about Material Master Configuration

Material Master Configuration involves following steps

1. Define length of material number

2. Define Industry sector

3. Define Material Type and Assign Number Range

4. Define Material group

5. Field selection

1. Define length of material number T code: OMSL
Spro sap ref img Logistic general material master  Basic settings  Define output format
to material number

Once we click on Define output format to material number below screen opens

In SAP ECC system maximum material length we can maintain is 18 characters. But in S/4 HANA
system we can maintain is 40 characters.

2. Define Industry Sector T code: OMS3

Spro sap ref img Logistic general material master Field selection Define industry sector

One we click on Define industry sector the below screen opens

After entering this screen we have to do new entry and enter all details and save

We defined Industry sector as Mechanical Industry

3. Define Material Type T code: OMS2

In material master levels Material Type is at highest hierarchy and it controls the different aspects

 It controls the number range

 It controls the screen field settings
 It controls the views in material master

Spro sap ref img Logistic general material master  Basic settings Material Types 
Define Attributes of Material types

Once we click on Define attributes of material type below screen opens

8105756883 www.tagskills.com support@tagskills.com

As we already know there are different types of material already provided by SAP as standard

Those are ROH, HALB, and FERT etc. now I am going to define my new material type by copying the
ROH STANDARD

Once we defined ROHY material type we have to select and click on quantity and value updating

8105756883 www.tagskills.com support@tagskills.com

Once we click the below screen opens and we have to tick the mark on Qty and Value update for
our valuation area (Plant) and save

Define Number range and assign it to Material type T code: MMNR

Spro sap ref img Logistic general material master  Basic settings Material Types 
Define number range for each material type

Once we click on define number range for each material type the below screen opens

Number range is combination of Groups and intervals, so firstly we define a Group and later we
assign Number range to it.

We created a Group for number range as Test No group MK01

And as per our client requirement we defined both internal and external number range to our
group

Let’s assign our material type to our Number range group

Finally assignment is done.

4. Define Material Group T code: OMSF

Material group is defined as classification of material with similar characteristics

Material group is helpful for reporting purpose also

Spro sap ref img Logistic general material master  settings for key fields Define material
group

8105756883 www.tagskills.com support@tagskills.com

Once you click on Define material groups below screen opens, enter group name, description and
Save

Our configured material group is M001

5. Maintaining the screen field settings T code: OMSR

As per our business requirement we can make fields as mandatory, Optional, Display and hide in
MM01 Screen

We have field reference which is most important thing in Field selection and it can be assigned to 3
different aspects i.e. Material type, Industry sector and Plant

8105756883 www.tagskills.com support@tagskills.com

Let’s check our field reference of our material type and industry sector later we can change any
field

For material type ROHY field reference is ROH

For industry sector Mechanical engineering Field reference is ROH

Let’s go to MM01 screen and change any field

8105756883 www.tagskills.com support@tagskills.com

As we can see order unit is optional entry, let’s change it to required

Before that lets check the technical name of Order unit MARA-BSTME

Spro sap ref img Logistic general material master  field selection Assign fields to field
selection group

Once we click on Assign fields to field selection group below screen opens enter technical name and
field reference name

Change optional entry to required entry and save the data.

Let’s go to MM01 screen again and test the changes

In above screen we can see that Order unit is now changed to optional to mandatory entry

Let’s create materials and test all our Configured data

8105756883 www.tagskills.com support@tagskills.com

Material 20000105 created internal number range

Material RAWK-M101 created external number range

Important T Codes in Material master

MM01 Create material

MM02 Change material

MM03 Display material

MM06 Flag for Deletion

MM17 Mass maintenance

MM60 List Display of Materials

MMAM Change material Type

MMBE Stock overview

Important Tables for Material Master

MARA  Material Master General data

MARC  Material Master Plant data

MARD  Material Master Storage location data

MBEW  Material Valuation

Important Interview questions

1. What is master data in SAP MM?

2. Why do we do quantity and value update?

3. Will ROH mat type have sales view? Will FERT mat type have purchasing view?

4. Is material data valid for all organizational levels?

5. What are important tables in Material Master?

6. How do you create a material?
