Unit Topic: Numbers through Millions

Content Standard: The student demonstrates an understanding of the concept of number notation and place value of
numbers up to 100, 000.

Performance Standard: The student is able to read, write, compare and arrange numbers through 100, 000 and round
off numbers to the nearest thousands and ten thousands.

Learning Competencies: The learner 1. Visualizes numbers up to 100 000 with emphasis on numbers 10 001 – 100 000.
2. Gives the place value and value of a digit in numbers up to 100 000. 3. Reads and writes numbers up to hundred
thousand in symbols and in words. 4. Rounds numbers to the nearest thousand and ten thousand. 5. Compares numbers
up to 100 000 using relation symbols. 6. Orders numbers up to 100 000 in increasing or decreasing order.

Transfer Goal: Students will be able to independently use their learning to use numbers logically to manage quantities
and amounts that they have in life. Apply their mathematical skills in managing their resources (allowance); and accept
that life’s journey is full of ups and downs.

Essential Question(s): Students will keep considering the following questions: 1. Why do we need to have a logical
system of quantifying amounts, properties and things? 2. Why does one need to be skilful in adding and subtracting in
the management of resources (e.g. money)? 3. How do you relate addition and subtraction to the ups and downs of life?

Enduring Understanding: Students will understand that a logical system of using numbers equates with easier
management of quantities and amounts; skills in addition and subtraction are essential in managing ones resources; and
journey to a successful life is flavoured by gaining (or addition) and losing or (subtraction).
