Using VPN on Windows
The following document details how to set up VPN when using Windows and how to connect to the VPN
when needed.
You only need to do the SETUP once, thereafter, each time you need to access the VPN, you only need to
CONNECT.
NB! Please make sure that you follow this document to the very end. There are Troubleshooting guides
that begin on Page 7 that will assist you in fixing your connection.
VPN SETUP
1. Click on the “Start” button
2. Start typing “Control Panel”
3. Once it pops up as shown below click on Control Panel to open it.
4. Click on ”Network and Internet”
5. Click on “Network and Sharing Centre”
6. Click on “Set up a new connection or network”
7. Select “Connect to a Workplace” and click next.
8. Select “Use my Internet connection”
9. Enter the details as shown below and click create:
Additional Setup Steps
When the steps below are NOT followed, you might lose internet connection when connected to the VPN
or have difficulty accessing Network Drives/Shares. Please follow the steps detailed below:
1. Go back to “Network and Sharing Center” (Detailed in the steps above) then click on Change adapter
settings.
2. Right-click the VPN profile you created and select Properties.
3. Click on the Security Tab
a. Make sure the “Allow these protocols” button is checked and Microsoft CHAP Version 2 is
selected as shown below.
4. Click on the Networking Tab
a. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPV4)
b. Click on Properties
5. Click Advanced
6. Make sure the box shown below is unticked.
CONNECT to the VPN
Once the VPN connection has been created, whenever a VPN connection is needed, follow these steps.
1. Click the Network icon in the System Tray on your taskbar (in the bottom right corner of your screen)
2. Click on Mandela VPN (the name you gave the VPN connection in step 9 above)
3. Click the connect button
4. The first time you connect, you will be asked to enter your credentials – enter your username in the
following format:
s123456789@[Link] (where 123456789 is your student number)
and enter your password
5. You should now see that you are connected
TROUBLESHOOTING
If the connection still fails please try the steps below:
1. Click on the Start button
2. Start typing “Device Manager”
3. Once it pops up as shown below click on Device Manager to open it.
4. Expand Network Adapters
5. Right-Click and Uninstall the drivers in the red box (All those starting with the word WAN Miniport)
as shown below:
6. Once you have uninstalled all the WAN Miniport Drivers, Right-click your computer name at the
very top of the list and Click on Scan For hardware changes.
7. Once complete you can attempt to connect again.
