FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINERY
(MECHANICAL ENGINEERING)
Time: 3 Hours Max Marks: 60
Note: This Question Paper contains two Parts A and B
 Part A is compulsory which carries 10 marks. Ten questions from five units. Answer all questions in
Part A at one place only.
 Part-B consists of 5 Questions (numbered from 2 to 6) carrying 10 marks each. Each of these
questions is from one unit and may contain a, b, c as sub-questions. For each question there will be an
either/or choice (that means there will be two questions from each unit and the student should answer
only one question).

PART – A (10x1 = 10 Marks)

PART – B (5x10 = 50 Marks)

Marks Bloom Level CO
2 .a A simple manometer is used to measure the pressure of oil (sp. gr. 10 3 1
= 0.7) flowing in a pipe line. Its right limb is open to the
atmosphere and the left limb is connected to the pipe. The centre
of pipe is 10 cm below the level of mercury (sp. gr. = 13.6) in the
right limb. If the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is
16 cm, find the absolute pressure of the oil in the pipe in N/cm2 .
OR
2.b The space between two square plates flat parallel plates is filled 10 3 1
with oil. Each side of the plate is 70 cm. The thickness of the oil
film is 14 mm. The upper plate, which moves at 3 m/s requires a
force of 98.1 N maintain the speed. Find: i) The dynamic viscosity
of the oil in poise, and ii) The kinematic viscosity of the oil if the
specific gravity of oil 0.95.
***
3.a Derive Bernoulli’s equation for a flow along a streamline and 10 3 2
state the assumptions
OR
3.b 300 litres/sec of water is flowing in a pipe having a diameter of 10 3 2
300 mm. If the pipe is bent by 140° (that is change from initial to
final direction is 135°), find the magnitude and direction of the
resultant force on the bend. The pressure of water flowing is 40
N/cm2.

***
4.a Define displacement thickness. Derive an expression for the 10 3 3
displacement thickness.
OR
4.b A horizontal pipe of diameter 500 mm is suddenly contracted to a 10 3 3
diameter of 250 mm. The pressure intensities in the large and
smaller pipe is given as 13.734 N/cm2 and 11.772 N/cm2
respectively. Find the loss of head due to contraction if Cc = 0.62.
Also determine the rate of flow of water.

***
5.a Explain the working of a Pelton wheel with a neat sketch. 10 2 4
OR
5.b A reaction turbine works at 450 rpm. Under a head of 120 m. Its 10 3 4
diameter at inlet is 1.2 m and the flow area is 0.4 m2. The angles
made by the absolute and relative velocities at inlet are 200 and
600 respectively with tangential velocity. Determine: i) The
volume flow rate , ii) The Power developed.
***
6.a Illustrate the working of a centrifugal pump with neat sketch 10 2 5
OR
6.b A Single acting reciprocating pump running at 40 rpm is 10 3 5
discharging 1 m3 of water per minute. The pump has a stroke of
400 mm. The diameter of the piston is 200 mm. The delivery and
suction head are 20 m and 5 m respectively. Find the slip of the
pump and power required to drive the pump.
