Grandparents play a vital role in children’s upbringing.
To
what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
The impact of grandparents on children has recently sparked a lot
of debate whether it is crucial or not. While others claim that they
bears little relation to the other, I am of the opinion that the role
of grandparents in children’s growing process is inevitably
important because of several reasons which will be discussed in
this essay.
On the one hand, many people would argue for the overemphasis
of grandparents on children’s growth. Firstly, the “generational
gap” between them is of the main reason for this viewpoint. In
other words, they hold a view that such “gap” will distance the
two generations from having any effects on the other due to
various differences relating to hobbies or lifestyles, for example.
Furthermore, parents have the most dramatic influence on
children’s upbringing as well as behavioral patterns in their daily
activities. Meanwhile, the role of grandparents is more inclined to
provide them general guidance, thus lessening their impact on
children decision-making or shaping the child’s worldview.
On the other hand, although these points may be true to some
extent, it is also important to acknowledge that grandparents play
an undeniably vital role in children’s upbringing in an extended
family. Many families especially the Asians have the culture of
family members living together, which can easily foster the
influence of grandparents on them through numerous daily
activities. By participating together in several leisure activities,
they can bridge their relationships through many current topics in
this day and age. Moreover, parental guidance seems to be
insufficient owing to their busy schedules for work in today’s rat
racing life. Thus, the influential role of grandparents is of the
utmost importance in children’s lifestyle via their substitutive
guidance for the children’s parents.
In conclusion, although both sides have valid arguments, I may
be more prone to the later opinion due to the aforementioned
factors.
