The NSW Junior Chess League
is pleased to invite your school to take part in the
SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ONE-DAY CHESS TEAMS TOURNAMENT
for the Terrey Shaw Shield
WHEN: Sunday 8 September 2024 – Registration 9.30 a.m. – Play 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Shore School, Blue Street, North Sydney,
(western end of Blue Street, a few minutes' walk from North Sydney railway station)
Parking available in school grounds, enter from Hunter Crescent (off William Street).
COST: FREE!!! thanks to support from chess-playing members of the Legal Profession
ELIGIBILITY: The tournament is open to all secondary schools in NSW.
FORMAT:
• The tournament will be run in two sections – Junior (Years 7-9 only) and Open (Years 7-12).
• Each team consists of three players.
• Schools may enter more than one team in each section if they wish, space permitting (priority will be given to
early entries).
• Within each team, players must be ranked in order of playing strength with the strongest player on Board 1.
It is strongly recommended that where players have NSWJCL ratings, these be used to determine board order,
but the rating order may be overridden where a school has determined that the ratings do not reflect the current
relative playing strengths of the players. However, where players are blatantly placed out of strength order (for
example, by sacrificing the weakest player on Board 1 in order to improve the chances of winning on the lower
boards), then forfeits may be incurred.
• Chess clocks will be used with a time limit of 20 minutes per player for each game. (Players unfamiliar with
chess clocks will be given guidance and practice before the start of the tournament – please arrive early.)
• There will be approximately seven rounds, with all teams playing every round (it is not a knock-out) – teams
will play against others with similar scores, which means that, after the first round or two, they will be playing
against others of much the same ability.
• The rules of the tournament are available on the NSWJCL website [Link] (click on “Schools”,
then look under the heading “Secondary Schools One-Day Tournament” and click on “Rules”)
ENTRIES: Enter online ([Link] – click on “Schools” then on “Entry Details” under the heading
“Secondary Schools One-Day Tournament”), or use the entry form below, scan and email.
Please enter by Thursday 5 September to enable smooth running of the tournament.
Late entries may be accepted (if space permits) only upon payment of a late entry fee of $30 per team.
Please avoid this by entering before the entry deadline. Teams entering on the day of the tournament
(and teams arriving late) may miss the first round, so that the start is not delayed for others.
ENQUIRIES: Richard Gastineau-Hills, phone 9498 2760, mobile 0403 962 442, email enquiries@[Link]
CANTEEN: A canteen will be available throughout the day for lunch and refreshments.
