Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

agen

When the battery is connected and the driver door opens, the door
contact switch activates the fuel pump. Escaping fuel can ignite
and cause a fire.
– Disconnect voltage supply to fuel pump before opening the
fuel system.

1.2 Safety measures when working on vehicles with a start/stop system

Risk of injury due to unexpected motor start
If the vehicle's start/stop system is activated, the engine could
start unexpectedly. A message in the dash panel insert indicates
whether the start/stop system is activated.
– Deactivate start/stop system by switching off the ignition.

1.3 Safety precautions when working on the SCR system

Risk of injury due to reducing agent
The reducing agent may cause eye and skin irritations as well as
injuries to the respiratory system and poisoning.

1. Safety information 1
Caddy 2016 ➤
Fuel supply system - Diesel engines - Edition 04.2019

– Wear protective goggles.

– Wear protective gloves.
– Always wear protective clothes.
– Make sure that a sufficient amount of fresh air is supplied. In
closed areas, switch on the exhaust gas extractor system.

Risk of damage caused by reducing agent

If reducing agent gets onto trim panels and body components, the
reducing agent may solidify after a while and thus damage the
surface.
– Make sure that no reducing agent gets onto the trim panels or
body components.
– If any reducing agent does get onto surfaces, remove it im‐
mediately using water and a cloth.

The engine number (engine code and serial number) can be
found at the front on the joint between engine and gearbox --.
Additionally there is a sticker with engine code on the upper tooth‐

by lksw

Prote AG.

Before starting work on the fuel supply system, the following steps
must be performed:
♦ Before starting work, the extraction hose of a switched-on ex‐
haust gas extraction system must be laid near to the assembly
opening of the fuel tank.
♦ The extraction hose is used to extract fuel fumes.
♦ If no exhaust gas extraction system is available, a radial fan
with a displacement greater than 15 m3/h can be used provid‐
ing that motor is not in air flow.
♦ Prevent skin contact with fuel! Wear fuel-resistant gloves!
♦ Interrupt power supply to fuel system pressurisation pump -
G6- ⇒ Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting
locations.
♦ Drain fuel tank ⇒ page 20 .

5.5 Removing and renewing fuel hoses in

engine compartment, fuel filter with 3
connections

Note

♦ On this engine, some of the connections for the pressurised

fuel hoses have what is known as a 2 wave profile section
-arrows- with an engagement lip. This reduces the likelihood
of fuel system leaks.
♦ When the fuel hoses are removed, the very thin sealing layer
on the inside of the fuel hoses is damaged.
♦ This damage cannot be detected with the naked eye. After
some time, it leads to leaks in the fuel system.
♦ If the fuel filter only has to be removed to gain space, leave
the fuel hoses on the fuel filter and high-pressure pump. Place
the fuel filter with the hoses connected on the engine to avoid
having to renew them unnecessarily.

the entire component must be renewed.

5. Fuel filter 67

The fuel line is under pressure.

Fuel poses danger of injury to eyes and skin.
Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to avoid injury
and contact with the skin. Wrap a cloth around the connection

carefully opening the connection.
Bear in mind that the fuel pump can be activated due to open‐
