FUTURE TENSES II

NAZARET BÓRNEZ MEGÍAS ACADEMIA LEARNING

FUTURE CONT INUOUS
• FORM:
• AFFIRMATIVE: Subj + will be + vb. Ing She will be travelling to London tomorrow morning
• NEGATIVE: Subj + won’t be + vb. Ing She won’t be travelling to London tomorrow morning
• INTERROGATIVE: Will + subj + be + vb. Ing Will she be travelling to London tomorrow morning?
What do we use this tense for?
• The function of the future continuous is to show a continuing (long) action getting interrupted by a short future action.
• It can be used for making predictions or suppositions about future events.
This time next week I will be sun-bathing in Bali.
By Christmas I will be skiing like a pro.
What do we use this tense for?
• In interrogative form, the future continuous can be used for politely asking for information about the future
Will you be bringing your friend to the pub tonight?
Will Jim be coming with us?
What do we use this tense for?
• In combination with “still”, it makes reference to events that are already happening and that we suppose that will last in
the future.
In an hour I'll still be ironing my clothes.
Tomorrow he'll still be suffering from his cold.
Tricks for knowing when do we have to
use this tense
• TIME MARKER:
• The time marker when is common for this case.
I will be sleeping when you arrive home from work next Friday night.
They will be doing presentations in class when the practice fire alarm rings at 2:00 pm.
Tricks for knowing when do we have to
use this tense
• It’s also possible to use the future progressive when a clock time is mentioned
What will you be doing at 8:00 pm tonight?
I will be studying at 8:00 pm tonight.
Tricks for knowing when do we have to
use this tense
• Another less common use of the future continuous is to emphasize two long actions. The time marker while, followed by
a simple present verb, can be used.
He will be cleaning while she cooks.
While she cooks, he will be cleaning.
He will be cleaning and she will be cooking
LET’S TRY TO DISTINGUISH IT FROM
FUTURE SIMPLE (will, be going to):
More than one answer may be correct.
• 1. You look hungry; I _____________ (make) you a sandwich.
• 2. John and I probably _____________ (not / come) to the party because it looks like it ______________ (rain).
• 3. I can’t have lunch at 2:00 because I _______________ (have) an operation at that time.
• 4. I ________________ (sleep) when you arrive so please try to be quiet.
• 5. The class _______________ (take) an exam at 9:00 tomorrow morning.
• 10. When she arrives at the school tomorrow, Michael _______________ (teach) the B2 class, Alex ____________ (administer) a
test, and Denis__________________ (probably, talk) to a new student.
FUTURE
PERFECT SIMPLE
What do we use this tense for?
• The future perfect tense is for talking about an action that will be completed between now and some point in the future.
• It doesn’t matter if the subject of your sentence is singular or plural. The formula doesn’t change.
• AFFIRMATIVE: Subj + will have + vb. Part (-ed/3rd column of irregular vbs)
Linda will have left before you get there.
• NEGATIVE: Subj + will not/ won’t have + vb. Part (-ed/3rd column of irregular vbs)
Linda won’t have left before you get there.
• INTERROGATIVE: Will + subj + have + vb. Part (-ed/3rd column of irregular vbs)
Will Linda have left before you get there?
When DO we use it?
• Sometimes, you can use the future perfect tense and the simple future tense interchangeably. In these two sentences,
there is no real difference in meaning because the word before makes the sequence of events clear:
Linda will leave before you get there. Linda will have left before you get there.
• But without prepositions such as before or by the time that make the sequence of events clear, you need to use the
future perfect to show what happened first.
At eight o’clock Linda will leave. (This means that Linda will wait until 8 o’clock to leave.)
At eight o’clock Linda will have left. (This means Linda will leave before 8 o’clock.)
When DO we use it?
• The future perfect tense is only for actions that will be complete before a specified point in the future.
• In other words, the action you’re talking about must have a deadline. If you don’t mention a deadline, use the future
simple instead of the future perfect.
Linda will leave.
Linda will have left.
• The deadline can be very specific (eight o’clock) or it can be vague (next week). It can even depend on when something
else happens (after the parade ends). It just has to be some time in the future.

and future perfect simple

looking back at the duration of that activity.

• At five o’clock, I will have been waiting for thirty minutes.
When do we use it?
• We CAN’T use the future perfect continuous with state verbs such as (know, to be, understand, have, believe, remember),
