SAMBA
Samba is a ballroom dance of Brazilian origin, popularized in western Europe
and the United States in the early 1940s. It is performed to music in 4/4 time with
syncopated rhythm and is characterized by basic forward and backward steps and
tilting, rocking body movements. The partners may split up to perform different moves
while couples in ballroom position dance in place or around the floor. The maxixe, a
dance that was popular from roughly 1870 to 1914, is the primary source of the dance.
A more traditional, distinctly African style of samba is also danced in Brazil outside of
ballrooms. It is a type of group dance that is occasionally referred to as batuque and is
performed either in double lines or in circles with a soloist, associated during Brazilian
Carnival.

RUMBA
Rumba, also spelled rhumba, is a ballroom dance of Afro-Cuban folk-dance
origin that became internationally popular in the early 20th century. The rumba is
danced using a basic pattern of two rapid side steps and a slow forward step. The
dance is best known for the performers' delicate side to side hip movements with the
torso erect. To reach each bar, three steps are taken. The 4/4 time signature of the
music has a persistent syncopation. The ballroom version is based on the Cuban son,
which is a mellower variation of the free-form Cuban rumba danced in bars and other
public settings. Occasionally, the term "rumba" is used to refer broadly to other Cuban
dances with comparable beats.
