BAB I PENDAHULUAN

A. Latar Belakang
English has developed into an important second language in many countries around the
world. Learning English as a second language (ESL) has become increasingly important
in today's globalized world (Rizoqulovna, 2023). This is due to its role as an international
language in fields such as economics, technology, education, and diplomacy. In many
countries, English is taught from an early age as part of the formal education curriculum,
as proficiency in English is seen as essential for accessing global opportunities.
Additionally, with the growth of technology and the internet, English has become the
dominant language in digital communication and international business, making it a
crucial tool for competing in the modern world.

In mastering English as a second language, the aspects that must be considered is the
understanding of vocabulary. According to Wardani (2015) states that vocabulary is an
important aspect of language because it appears in every language skill, including
listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It can be concluded from this statement that
vocabulary is a key factor in language, as it is required in speaking, reading, and writing.
This means that a person's low proficiency in a language is closely related to the amount
of vocabulary they possess.

Due to their limited abilities, young students find it difficult to learn vocabulary.
Repeating and memorizing the words provided by the teacher doesn’t seem enjoyable.
The boredom and lack of motivation to memorize vocabulary make students feel that it is
a challenging task.
When the researcher conducted field research at Junior High School 03 Salatiga in
August-October 2024, the researcher found problems related to students' vocabulary
mastery. The weakness of the learning process at Junior High School 03 Salatiga is the
lack of innovative teaching styles, which makes students less interested and easily bored
in participating in learning activities. This is because teachers use conventional methods
and approaches when teaching students. In practice, when explaining material, teachers
only use the lecture method and rarely explain using game methods, where students are
considered passive and merely listen to the material delivered by the teacher. The
application of traditional teaching styles is deemed less appropriate for today's students;
therefore, new innovations are needed to stimulate students' interest in learning so that
they become interested in following the learning process and actively participating in
classroom learning activities.

The students I taught during my recent teaching practicum were mostly kinesthetic
learners. If they are only taught by listening, without incorporating innovative methods
such as games, they tend to become easily bored and disengaged. One of method that can
be used to improve students’ ability to master vocabulary is to use Game as a method.
Uberman, 1998 stated By integrating games into language learning, students have the
opportunity to utilize language in a way that makes them more relaxed. The use of Games
in teaching and learning activities will encourage students can play an active role in the
learning process. There are many Game method that can be used in Vocabulary learning,
one of which is using the Snake and ladder board game. Snake and ladder board game is
a board game in which players try to make words from letters printed on small plastic
blocks and connect them to the words already placed on the board. Snake and ladder are
memory games used to help students encourage the students’ vocabulary mastery (Pavita,
2022). Generally, this Game will be played in groups. By using Snake and ladder board
games students will group words according to the category requested by the card.
Through this Game, the teacher wants to make students play an active role in the learning
process. Besides that, through this method, the teacher can also find out how much
vocabulary students can master in a short time.

Based on the research above, the method currently used by the teacher is considered less
suitable to be applied as a vocabulary teaching method. Therefore, the researcher plans to
use the Snake and Ladder game as a tool to enrich vocabulary at Junior High School 03
Salatiga. By using the Snake and Ladder game, the researcher wants to find out the
effectiveness of the game in improving students' vocabulary mastery. The results of
learning using the Snake and Ladder board game can be seen after the researcher
implements it. Considering this, the researcher has shown interest in conducting this
research.
