JDKK 102
1 Scope
1.1 JDKK 102 specifies the requirements for a black color appearance, hexavalent chromium-
free, zinc nickel coating with a 0.09-0.16 coefficient of total friction (CoF) requirement. It is a
hybrid coating consisting of an electroplated zinc nickel base coat with a supplemental top coat
applied by a dip-spin or spray process. JDKK 102 coating is similar to JDM F26A but has
enhanced requirements for corrosion resistance. It is intended for parts that are exposed to
highly corrosive agricultural chemical environments.
1.2 JDKK 102 is based on JDM F26. Parts specified to JDKK 102 shall conform to all the
requirements of JDM F26A and the corrosion resistance requirements specified below
1.3 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall”
or “required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with
this standard. This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally
identified by the words “should” or “recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions
is not required, because they might not be appropriate for all machines or all applications.
2 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of JDKK 102, the terms and definitions in JDM F26 and the following apply.
As Processed
Samples collected at the supplier’s manufacturing facility after coating with the production
intent material using production equipment and processes.
NSS
Neutral salt spray
Significant Surface
Surface on which the specified coating properties apply, including all surfaces of the part that
are normally visible, directly or by reflection ( typically sides and top of screw head and the
crests of a minimum of two threads from the end of the screw), and that can be touched by a
20 mm diameter ball.
Test Specimen
Production part or surrogate part as agreed between the supplier and John Deere, coated with
the production intent material using production equipment and processes.
White Corrosion Products
Visual corrosion of the zinc coating, often referred to as “sacrificial coating corrosion” or “white
rust”, which typically occurs prior to base metal corrosion.
3 Designation
JDKK 102 shall be the designation on part drawings or specifications for a coating meeting the
requirements of JDKK 102.
2
JDKK 102
4 General Requirements
4.1 JDKK 102 coatings shall be compliant to ISO 15726 with the additions or exclusions of
JDM F26 and JDKK 102.
4.2 JDKK 102 coatings shall be compliant to JDM H30. The presence of hexavalent
chromium shall be tested in accordance with ISO 3613. A statement identifying the part is free
of hexavalent chromium shall be provided during PPAP
4.3 JDKK 102 coatings shall be black appearance.
4.4 JDKK 102 coatings shall contain 12-16 % nickel content.
4.5 Prior to coating, the parts shall be free of oil, scale and similar foreign materials. The
cleaning process shall have no detrimental effects on the substrate, including shall not lead to
embrittlement.
4.6 Any locations where rack contact marks are permissible shall be specified or agreed to by
a John Deere representative.
5 Corrosion Resistance Requirements
5.1 Neutral Salt Spray (White Corrosion Products)
Test specimens shall pass the 240 hour minimum NSS to white corrosion products specified in
JDM F26.
5.2 Nitric Acid/Neutral Salt Spray Test-Procedure
5.2.1 Test specimens shall be drop tested per JDKK 103.
5.2.2 A minimum of ten specimens shall be tested with five exposing the head end of the
screw and five exposing the threaded end of the screw. The specimens are exposed to 408
hours of JDQ 178 nitric acid test. Specimens are high-pressure rinsed (11 MPa pressure
washer with 30° fan nozzle held 150-400 mm from the specimen surface) with tap water once
after completing JDQ 178 nitric acid test and prior to Neutral Salt Spray test. They are then
exposed to 600 hours of ASTM B117/ISO 9227 Neutral Salt Spray test.
5.3 Nitric Acid/Neutral Salt Spray Test—Evaluation
5.3.1 Specimens may exhibit a maximum of 10% base metal corrosion (red rust) per ISO
4628-3 after 600 hours of the Neutral Salt Spray test. At least four of each group of five
specimens must pass
5.4 Ag Chemical Resistance Test
5.4.1 Test specimens shall be tested and evaluated per JDKK 104.
3
JDKK 102
6 Approval
If the specimens pass the 10% base metal corrosion requirement per JDKK 102, the 240 hour
white corrosion products requirement per JDM F26 and the JDKK 104 Ag Chemical Resistance
Test, the coating, coating process and particular coater as a whole are certified to JDKK 102 as
a family approval
7 Test Frequency
For a coating, coating process and coater to maintain JDKK 102 certification, it shall be retested
and approved per JDKK 102 at least every two years unless otherwise agreed between the
supplier and John Deere.
