INTRODUCTION

The paper company, JME Company, was asked by a client to design a

packaging for a wine box presentation. This written report will contain details on
what type of box material will be used, its dimensions and the maximum volume,
and the expected profit during the transaction.

THE BOX

The client requests to have the ‘perfect’ box for their wine box presentation,
“Wine Up”. The client wishes to have three demi-sized bottles of wine inside an
open-top box. The company has decided to make a rigid box made of Grey
Board sheets.

An example of the proposed open-top box for the Wine Up box presentation.

Grey Board is made from ‘100% recycled material formed by transforming

recycled fibers and compressing them into a strong, flexible board’ (Artpac,
2019). The material is commonly used in making stationeries, packaging and
even furniture for its following characteristics: durability, flexibility, and cost
effectiveness (Vettiyil, 2018). A variety of sizes can be made to fit the needs of
the client. In this case, grey boards will be a suitable packaging for the product
considering that the product will be made of glass. The type of packaging
material will protect the product from possible destruction and will also have nice
packaging aesthetics.

The dimensions of the wine box is 14” by 12”, which allows three demi glass wine
bottles to fit in it. Demi glass bottles are 9” in height with a diameter of 2”.

3. With the decided measures of the material you have in mind, how are
you going to make the box given the condition to maximize its
material? (Steps in optimization)

Step 1: Identify the equation of the volume of the box

Step 2:

THE COST AND PROFIT

In making one box of the wine bottle presentation, the total cost excluding the
mark-up is Php 40.00. The proposed selling price of the said box will be Php
46.00. In determining the selling price per box, the following factors were
considered:

Cost of Production

Material cost (Grey board sheet) Php 30.00

Labor cost Php. 10.00

Profit

Mark-up (20% of the cost of production) Php 6.00

TOTAL Php. 46.00

The cost of production includes the grey board sheets which cost Php 30.00 per
sheet, the labor cost for Php 10.00 and the mark-up which is twenty-percent of
the cost of production. The mark-up added to the selling price is Php 6.00,
making one box cost Php 46.00.

The said selling price has been calculated to ensure if the price is justifiable to
both the company and the client. The price is beneficial to both parties.

The ordering of boxes will come in bulk therefore there is a required number of
boxes that the client must order. A minimum of 30 boxes shall be bought. Once
the required minimum number of boxes are met, the selling price per excess box
will be Php 43.00.

If the client orders a number below the minimum required number of boxes, it will
affect the company’s income. The company’s income will be reduced and the
cost of producing the boxes will not be returned.

To justify the mentioned possibilities, below is a brief computation:

Minimum number of boxes 30 boxes

that can be ordered

Minimum earnings = Selling price x minimum number of boxes

=Php 46.00 x 30 boxes

=Php 1380.00

Equation for calculating the profit:

Let : y =profit ; x=no .of total boxes

y=[ Minimum earnings+ Php 43.00 (x−30)]−40 x

y=[Php 1380+ Php 43.00 (x−30)]−40 x

y=Php 1380+ Php 43.00 x−Php 1290.00−Php 40.00 x

y=3 x + Php 90.00

This will be the simple equation for calculating the profit.

THE NUMBER OF BOXES PRODUCED AND ITS PROFIT

A simple graphical representation of the relationship between the number of

orders (boxes) and its profit is given below.

As the number of boxes produced increases, the profit also increases.

DISCUSSIONS

1. The need to maximize the materials used in making a box.

There are several reasons as to why there is a need to maximize the usage of
the materials in making a box. First and foremost, the primary rationale for
maximizing materials is to fully make use of every inch of the material so that the
margin of waste is lessened. With this in mind comes the second reason which is
to increase cost efficiency. The higher the maximization, the lower the waste and
the lower the waste, the lower of the cost of production. This is a very imperative
concept that most manufacturing processes take into account (“Maximizing
Composite Material Utilization,” 2012). Maximizing material usage is very critical
in cutting down costs especially when dealing with expensive materials. Third,
through the collective effort of minimizing the profusion of waste, the environment
is slightly protected as the resources are used to its full potential and a large
number of waste is not discarded. Maximization of materials greatly increases
the productivity of resources thus increasing the life cycle of a material (a
material is said to have ended its life span if thrown or discarded), this is
according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (“Sustainable
Materials Management Basics,” 2019).

2. Outcome of cutting materials without considering the total area to

be used.

If the production process of the box does not include maximization and merely
comprises cutting through the materials, then the generation of unwanted waste
will increase thus decreasing the profit and cost efficiency while potentially
furthering the harm in our environment. To put in simple words, if the total area is
not considered in the making of the box then by the end of its making, a lot of
leftover material will be discarded which may increase pollution. Furthermore, the
more leftover material there is, the lower the cost efficiency and the lower the
profit.

3. Vital role of derivatives in relation to making the box.

The role of derivatives in relation to the making of the box lies in the
maximization of the material and the cost of the product. Through derivatives, the
most suitable volume, material and size can be calculated and evaluated. The
concept of derivatives was discovered to accommodate problems like these in
the first place.

What are your insights about derivatives in real-life?

To be honest, prior to this activity, I did not know the use and application
of derivatives to real-life situations and since this involves mathematics, I didn’t
even bother to search and learn what derivatives really are for. However, as I did
this activity and answered a few of the questions, I was pleasantly amazed to
discover that derivatives hold such a quintessential role in the modern world we
live, breathe and enjoy in today.

The concept of derivatives are applied to pretty much everything, not just
the making of a box. In the fashion industry, patterners make sure that the
pattern of clothes they make will fit closely according to the area of the fabric so
as to minimize fabric scraps that’ll be later discarded. In the electronic industry,
manufacturers make sure to maximize the use of carbon plates and sheets to
reduce wasting of this unrenewable and expensive resource. Finding out about
those pretty much made me realize that derivatives really are as important as
mathematicians and teachers point them out to be. You can see the result of
derivatives to almost everything, from the gargantuan buildings and their
concrete to hand-held cell phones and their electronic boards within.

In sum, I can say that I’m glad to have known about derivatives. It makes
me appreciate math more because the complicated and systematic ways of math
are so beautiful when you can see the end result of the formula, the
manifestation of the equation.

Well, I was just going with the flow around the whole idea of the
discussion, like every topic, trying to understand every piece of it. Derivatives
really did challenge my mental capacity. Confusion got me sometimes when I’m
dealing with problems and such but nonetheless was able grasp the whole idea
of the topic. With that, all I can say is derivatives may be complicated as it may
seem but really it is quite a helpful medium of determining optimization and stuff
and all about the maxima and the minima.

That being said, considering every theorem you can apply it to come up
with the measurement without actually trying to measure and use an instrument
to get the measurement. Also in addition, since derivative is a slope. We can
determine the curve of a line and so on and so forth. Derivatives don't just give
us academic stress but it kinda helps us in a sense of dealing with real life
measuring of unknown sizes of figures. And that made derivative a great subject
for the students to take up.

What are your insights about derivatives in real life?

Derivatives are used to determine the derived value of one or more underlying
functions when they exist in a slope of tangent line to the graph of the function at
a point. The insight about derivatives in real life is actually a day to day routine
like that of an adult to a child, from working and having to play games that focus
on components. The adult focus on the income and the stability of the company
to improve their products to gain more money for the company by not only relying
on one product but may soon one day switch to have a better and gain more
profit from another product. While playing a game as a child that relies on
predictions and strategic advances, using derivatives you can know which one to
upgrade and to improve your game to make one player stronger than the other
players.

Derivatives applied in real life give us a better pick of our choices, which ability
do we need to improve to better gain the opportunities that may come.

To be honest every discussion of this lesson I ask myself what's the

purpose and use/application in real life. Honestly I thought that this topic would
be of no use for me since I'm applying for a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.
Upon receiving this Performance Task, I wonder why we have to do this
particular task. Like it's all about the box and how would you propose it in order to
sell. I thought to myself that this project is far from what we usually do during
discussions like business and etc. That is just my thought and assumption that
this will have no use in my future course.

Turns out derivatives will be so much useful because it will also help you
determine profits and loss in business. Since I will be learning accounting, this
topic is essential to me. Since then I learned that you do not underestimate every
topic that will be discussed or to think that it will have no use for you in real life
because you don't know that it can be useful some time. I also learned
derivatives will be useful for me as a future accounting student or even
accountant, also we have business this will also be so much useful for us so we
can see and evaluate our market strategy.

Derivatives can be defined as the rate of change of one quantity with

respect to another related quantity. In our performance task, we are tasked to
make a box while measuring its capacity or volume. Derivative is indeed very
essential to test the efficiency of the box and the correct price for it.

The use of Derivatives on making a box

1. The rate of change of the volume of the box changes with respect to its
size and;
2. The rate of change of the price of the box with respect to its volume
and size

Derivatives are applied in real-life context. In the field of business, we can

use derivatives to calculate the profit and loss of the company using a graph
which consists of x and y values (derivative). Having the chance to monitor the
profit and loss in a business will surely help an entrepreneur to be on track with
what is happening in his business. Another example would be the proper pricing
for a product in regards to the expenses allotted to make that certain product. We
can also use the concept of derivative when playing sports. Say for example,
playing basketball. One must consider the angle, strength and distance of
release in shooting the ball to the hoop. By doing so, we can calculate whether
the length of arc and the path gives us a high possibility that the ball will reach
the hoop successfully.

During every meeting and discussions about the derivatives in Basic

Calculus, I always asked myself “How can these lessons be applied in our daily
or real-life situation?”. In learning derivatives, I always seek the importance of
these lessons because it gives me inspiration or motivation to solve each
problem regarding calculus despite how difficult to solve it. Then our teacher
gave us this kind of performance task in which I could tell about how useful and
important the derivatives are in real-life applications particularly in optimization
problems.

The performance task was about business math because it tells about the
appropriate price of the product in which it needs to be solved in order to gain
profit. We could not only limit the importance of derivatives in business math, but
also in Biology which is used in estimating the growth and the production of the
number of cells in our body. And since my chosen course, which is Bachelor of
Science in Information Technology, is accompanied with technology and
mathematics, learning derivatives might be a big help in college because I might
apply my knowledge in derivatives in aiding my computer programs to make it
much easier.

What are your insights about derivatives in real life?

In class derivatives were used in finding the maximum and minimum of a
parabola. At first, I thought it was a problem for building structures but then I
realized that parabolas are used in graphs to show trends.

I never knew that derivatives were used in packaging products or objects.

I thought derivatives were used by structures built by engineers. But now I
learned that it is important for many reasons including for packaging. The simple
use of a derivative could save tons of money which will be valuable for the
growth and development for a company. The words ‘maximizing’ and ‘minimizing’
are very important for businessmen or people with certain jobs. For example, a
company should minimize costs in production while maintaining quality or a
company should maximize the use of every machine or asset. I am just
understanding the use of derivatives in real life and how it connects to the
importance of using tools with maximum benefits and minimum costs. Derivatives
would be especially important for workers in the industry like industrial engineers
which is a course that I am thinking of getting. Industrial engineers are supposed
to improve systems in a company to be more effective and convenient

In conclusion, derivatives have more use than just finding that maximum
and minimum of parabolas. It has a role in industries economy and financial
stability. It gives me inspiration to learn it better because I know it will be useful in
college.

What are your insights about derivatives in real life?

As Sir Edgar scribbled on the board, doing his usual discussions, I was
worried about the complexity of the lesson he was trying to discuss. It took me
time before I finally understood the concept of derivatives. Straightforwardly, our
last performance task for Basic Calculus allowed us to see the light, the
importance of the subject. The performance task made me feel that I was like an
employee, tasked for a commission. We think of the design of the box and its
material, take consideration of the selling price because of its factors, and
calculate the profit.

This was where it became so interesting how such numbers give you a
'preview' of the future. When you want to engage in businesses, through the use
of optimization, you get a picture of the costs and profit you may encounter. You
can prepare yourself mentally, physically and financially of the possible problems
that may arise.

Also, derivatives gave me so much insight about real life. In derivatives,

when you first look at it, it looks long, complex and impossible to solve. But as
you try to understand it, it is actually very interesting to solve. Just like in life's
journey, at first hand, we assume that life is all difficult, BUT it is actually all in
one's mind set. Somehow we need to understand and grasp that there will
always be difficulties in life but it does not mean that it cannot be solved! It can
be solved as long as you think for a solution and you strengthen yourself.
