Position and Direction

Maths | Year 2 | Area Overview

Introduction
This geometry unit allows children to order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences, including those in
different orientations. Children learn to use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a
straight line. Children also learn to distinguish between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns
in clockwise and anticlockwise directions. Pupils use the concept and language of angles to describe ‘turn’ by applying rotations in practical
contexts.

Resources

By the end of this unit...

...all children should be able to:

• order and arrange combinations of mathematical
objects in patterns and sequences.

...most children will be able to:

• use mathematical vocabulary to describe
position, direction and movement, including
movement in a straight line;
• distinguish between rotation as a turn and in
terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-

• work with patterns of shapes, including those in
different orientations;
• use the concept and language of angles to

Lesson Breakdown
Order and arrange objects and shapes in patterns and sequences.

Pattern and Sequence (1): Pefect Patterns

I can make and describe patterns by colouring.

Pattern and Sequence (2): 2D Shape Sequences

I can make and describe patterns with 2D shapes and tell you where a shape will appear in the sequence.

Pattern and Sequence (3): 3D Shape Sequences

I can make and describe patterns with 3D shapes and tell you where a shape will appear in my sequence.

Home Learning: Quilt Patterns

Differentiated homework activities for reinforcing the concept of pattern and sequence.

Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement including movement in a straight
line and distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-
quarter turns (clockwise and anticlockwise).
Position, Direction and Movement (1): Mend the Quilt
I can follow instructions for position, direction and movement.

Position, Direction and Movement (2): Lovely Lines

I can recognise movement in a straight line.

Position, Direction and Movement (3): Treasure Island

I can follow and give instructions involving position, direction and movement.

Turns, Rotations and Right Angles (1): Right-Angled Clocks

I can find quarter and half turns on a clock.

Turns, Rotations and Right Angles (2): Right-Angled Roads

I can explore turns of a right angle in clockwise and anticlockwise directions.

Turns, Rotations and Right Angles (3): Robin Rotations

I can follow instructions to make different types of rotations working with the points of a compass.

Home Learning: Turn My House Around

Differentiated homework activities for investigating items that turn in different ways at home.
